As a non-Catholic Christian, I understand excommunication to be expulsion from the Church. I understand “defrocking” to be withdrawal from the clergy, voluntarily or involuntarily. A priest who decides to get married, abandoning his vow of celibacy, would be an example. As I understand it, such a person would remain a member of the Church.
