My sixteen years old was telling me that communist is used as an insult at his school. When he tries to explain what it means, the other students walk off calling him one. It might be 30 years after the Cold War, but the word still has negative connotations in the American psyche.

Real communism (Stalin’s USSR etc.) has earned its bad reputation.

It doesn’t help that US RWNJs call anything to the left of Adolf Hitler “communist”.
