I’m no expert, but I’m guessing not. When I got my iPod I set up iTunes just to organize my music from CDs, with no intention of ever buying anything. I could not complete the set up without giving them a credit card number. You could probably check the terms of service to see how they use the number and whether they retain it beyond initial verification.

Or you could just listen to radio.
