Something that cannot go on forever…won’t.

We have hit the limits of the Green Revolution. We are running out of Phosphorus for fertilizer. For the first time in 50 years we are now facing a new type of wheat rust that destroys crop yields. New wheat varients that are used around the world have no defense against it and it has now appeared in East Africa and South Asia.

Lack of arable crop lend was a factor in the Rwanda massacres, and we would be idiots to assume that Malthusian arithmatic simply doesn’t apply to us. We may just keep going the way we have been and escape bad luck and geologic or climate change scenarios while finding new ways to keep aggresive new pathogens away.

Or we may not.

That is an excellent point. The PNAS listed of course says that they can not predict some wonder mutation plant that has yet to be bred. However, it is foolish to assume that one will arise and then bank on it. With current crops and current patterns, massive famines in America are coming. That is a fact.
