Germany has had a mandatory deposit on all water, beer and soft-drink bottles since 2002.

We’ve had that here for a long time too, but five cents doesn’t mean much to most people.

Which is why we see homeless people with hefty bags dragging themselves down the street, pulling the five-cent containers out of the trash cans, to take to supermarkets to redeem. 3 or 4 hours of work gets them enough money for a McDonald’s Value-Meal.
