These Japanese are strange people. You’d think since they live on such a cramped island they’d be a little more conscious about the environment. They are pretty fad oriented. The rarer something becomes, the more they want it. I have little doubt they’d empty the ocean in pursuit of delicacies.

My take, which frankly isn’t informed by much, is that they are very traditional when it comes to certain things, but their traditionalism doesn’t scale well with the size of their modern population, at least not when it comes to food.

For what it’s worth, their population - like that of most of the industrialized world, and to a lesser extent the world as a whole - is projected to peak by mid-century, and decline thereafter.
