As the resident High School Football coach:

Our team, and many others in our area, push extra cardiac testing if that student has had family members with any type of heart problem, or murmur. Anecdotally, this seems to be an issue more with African American males than white males. I have no data to back that up. Of the previous four or five deaths in my state that I can recall, all were due to some pre-existing, but undiscovered heart condition.

Is that because African Americans are more likely to have those conditions, or because their pre-existing conditions are more likely to be undiscovered? Pretty sure any parent who knew their kid had heart trouble would have urged them to play violin, or chess, instead of football.
