DARK MIXER Film

Direction, Drawing, Sound : Hirotoshi Iwasaki

This work has a “motion’s dépaysement” in the concept that extracts the motion from existing video and transposes and transformation to animation. When I remix reality that our own way of thinking, objects come out. It evokes the contents of unconscious mixer and also I can say it is “DARK MIXER”.

Plastic Surgeon: New York Women Dropping $50k to Look Like Ivanka Trump (goes to Raw Story)

Dr. Norman Rowe told the paper [the New York Post] that since last summer, up to 50 clients have come into his office with dreams of transforming their faces into President Donald Trump’s little girl — asking for widened cheekbones, a slender nose and large eyes.

According to the report, patients are willing to fork over $30K-$40K for Botox — and even up to $50K for what he calls the “Permanent Ivanka,” which includes cheek implants and rhinoplasty.

“I never saw [anyone drawing inspiration from Ivanka’s face] before the primary,” said Rowe.

Rowe says that Donald Trump’s oldest daughter now rivals Kylie Jenner as the most sought-after celebrity face.

By normalizing Spicer, it makes a lot of our criticisms of this administration look like a joke. I mean yeah we do need to laugh but at the same time, Spicer had no problem lying for this administration and demonizing people who opposed it.

Jut got a call from a survey company asking about my television watching habits.

Apparently she was confused with “We don’t own a television set and cable service is not available here.” She kept trying to get me to clarify that response to try to get it to fit to the answers she did have.

There are an awful lot of corporations and people who are not aware that every First World whizbang thing is not available in all parts of the nation.

There are places in the US where one cannot get competent broadband. Ask my folks, who are literally just a couple of blocks away from a fiber network, but because of the county boundary, they are denied access to truly modern Internet. Instead, they’re stuck on a DSL line that is effectively the 56k dial-up of the current decade.

Same here. There is a Google fibre optic line that runs two blocks from my house.

It runs right past our town. I have DSL that ofttimes is as slow as dial-up (when it is working at all).

The media was complicit in Trump’s election. There is nothing to indicate that they have learned anything from this experience. We might want people deciding elections, but that map is how they are decided. I did make the argument here at LGF several months ago that “square miles matter” but it didn’t go over so well.

Considering the number of special elections in safe state seats that are flipping from GOP to Dems, perhaps some of the folk out here in the great empty part of the country are taking notice.

It is unfortunate that too many people focus on land mass rather number of votes to frame how they see the country. But it is not truly land mass that makes the determination but rather how Electoral Votes are apportioned by state, which assigns too heavy a weight to less populated states. And that is a problem even without the restrictions on voting access and voting rights in states run by Republicans.

Juanita Jean reports on a bunch of anti-government gun-nut extremists taking over a town in Fort Bend County, Texas. It is comprised primarily of Cambodian refugees and descendants of the Vietnam War …

The gun nuts saw an opportunity to pass themselves off as “good guys” (like Hezbollah) by allegedly providing hurricane relief aid to the community.

They then ran off FEMA workers and are claiming the residents are saying they don’t need Federal government workers or aid in the town. The sheriff is trying to figure out what to do with these assholes (shades of Meal Team Six in Oregon, outnumbering and outgunning the local authorities).

Shape Shifting Extremists

Here’s where things get weird - in Fort Bend County is a small agricultural community outside of Rosharon called Little Cambodia. It’s populated by Cambodian refuges, has its own Buddhist temple and has been pretty self sufficient. The area suffered serious flooding, and being outside of larger communities, was left on its own as the effort to respond to the disaster was organized. American Freedom Keepers, a lose affiliation of gun-toting anti-government screwballs based in Portland, Oregon, saw an opportunity, joined forces with a motorcycle club called Confederate Riders of America and swept in proclaiming that they are in charge of recovery. FEMA representatives were threatened by this crowd when they arrived trying to assess the situation and promptly left, feeling the area unsafe for their workers. AFK has now essentially taken over the community. The Confederate Riders say the community “is not ready for federal help”, whatever that means. The Fort Bend County sheriff is apparently trying to get handle on the situation.

“Skiing here is just like skiing in a big refrigerator,” ten-year-old Kane Li grinned beneath his neon goggles, who has his hopes pinned on competing at the [2022 Winter Olympic] games [in Beijing].

[…]

The country is currently home to roughly six million skiers, but President Xi Jinping hopes that number will rise to 300 million in the coming years.

[…]

There are currently about 200 ski resorts in China. Chinese officials are aiming to increase that number fivefold by 2030.

There are 463 ski resorts in the United States.

Oh, I found this interesting.

For average visitors, the cost to ski for an entire day, including all rental equipment, is 488 yuan ($74). The most popular package is a three-hour visit at 300 yuan ($45).

That’s about what you’d pay at a small mom & pop ski area in most of the Rockies for a lift ticket, not including equipment.

Amazing amount of whining online about the new ST: Discovery.

Especially by keyboard-alpha-males.

The Klingon make over was a deal breaker for me.
The show Star Trek Enterprise answered the Klingon questiion how the Klingons from TSO becamse the TNG Klingons. It was some experimental drug they took that caused the change. The Klingons were always meant to be a Science Fiction version of the Russians. The TNG Klingons were perfect and should not have been changed. I think it’s just more of the same old SJWs lets make everything political correct bs. because the Klingons were very aggressive Alpha males with very sexual and violent females. I know to the SJWs that makes them uncomfortable. Oh well. I have a feeling STD will be ok for some people but to the original Star Terk fans won’t be interested in it.

Just imagine, being uncomfortable with violence towards women.

The gall of “SJWs”.

See, this is the sort of shit that made it impossible for criticism to be lodged against the new Ghostbusters without getting lumped in with the MRA crowd. ST:D is looking like an absolute trainwreck and it has nothing to do with “SJWs,” but instead with the classic executive meddling that has defined Star Trek since the 90s. CBS and Paramount carved up the baby King Solomon-style and it’s led to a situation where neither can really give us an authentic Trek series without the other suing their ass into the ground for copyright infringement.

Bernie did jackshit to get her elected. He held out until just before the convention in the hopes that he could work the refs to give him the nomination, then gave her a lackluster “endorsement” on Day One that seemed more about him and his “revolution” than the candidate of the party he supposedly had joined, and then he did nothing to get his supporters onboard with her. A couple speeches was not enough to undo the damage that his cancerous support base was inflicting IRL and on the net.

The Prime Directive was one of those writer tools that made sense when originally created, but became a crutch upon which writers leaned when they had to create false tension. “It’s a planet with millions of people, but they don’t have warp drive, so we can do nothing but sit and watch them die.” Whenever an episode invoked the PD, it inevitably became a question of just how they’d find a way to paper over their violation of it.

Same goes for the transporter. In theory, every time there was a real problem for the away team, all they should have had to do was “beam them up.”

In practice of the show, the transporter seemed to break down every other episode, based on the ground situation.

Let’s not forget the holodeck, which was guaranteed to break in some way that either meant it couldn’t be shut down, the people inside couldn’t escape, or that the “safety protocols” would go offline to put the occupants in mortal danger.

Let’s also not forget that Starfleet was the organization which invented a weapon that could fire a metallic slug that could not be effected by fields/interference that would disable energy weapons, could be modified with a microtransporter so that it could be fired through walls, and could bypass the known ability of their greatest enemy up to that point (the Borg) to adapt to energy weapons…and then promptly shelved it to develop “regenerative phasers.”

There have been two attempts by ST series to explain this:

Preceding the Federation by hundreds of thousands of years there was a large empire that spread over much of the galaxy in which the Federation now occupies.

Secondly, long ago in the early period of the galaxy an extra-galactic civilization seeded our galaxy with amino acids that would form the basis of the evolution of life into similar forms.

A third explanation is the god-in-the-box solution, which was never formally presented but lays there like an open sore: The Q.

That’s exactly the problem. This came about because instead of artistic interests the only decision was how to maximize immediate quarter profits for each corporation.

But in the long run it is killing the franchise.

The big problem is that both sides got the distribution rights to part of the franchise, but the parts they didn’t are owned by the other guy, and both are lawsuit-crazy. CBS can release the TV series but can’t use certain elements to make new ones, while Paramount can release the movies but can’t use any existing material to make new ones. Viacom’s figured out this isn’t working, but nobody really wants to merge back together.

Not sure what the real market is for more SciFi shows on the small screen.

Most that exist are just juvenile coming-of-age-angst shows (e.g., Dark Matter). Certainly that is true of the many vampire/zombie shows (e.g., Midnight, Texas.)

Attempts like The Orville strike me as kind of lost between comedy and drama. It has good ratings for the premier, but I wonder how quickly the ratings will tank.

The new Star Trek was created to drive people to the new CBS on-demand subscription service, but I feel that market is now so overloaded with options that I fear CBS will learn a very hard lesson.

The female security guard who was attacked by a Liberty honor student might well have been killed if she hadn’t been armed. The student hit her twice with a hammer, doing enough damage to put her in the hospital. She shot him before he got in another blow. This was a big story in Lubbock because the student was from there and had been salutatorian of a Baptist high school. This school is associated with a church that gave away guns as door prizes at a “Harvest Festival” event.

I didn’t know box cake mix was waning in popularity, it doesn’t last two days in my house. But in Alaska, there is nothing more popular than box mix cake, with some substitutions, of course.

Elsewhere, the American appetite for packaged baking mixes is waning, according to the market research firm Mintel, as consumers move away from packaged foods with artificial ingredients and buy more from in-store bakeries and specialty pastry shops. Yet in the small, mostly indigenous communities that dot rural Alaska, box cake is a stalwart staple, the star of every community dessert table and a potent fund-raising tool.

“Cake mixes are the center of our little universe,” said Cynthia Erickson, who owns the only grocery store in Tanana, an Athabascan village of 300 along the Yukon River in central Alaska. “I have four damn shelves full.”

Exactly and the suggestion is somehow the urban votes mean less since they’re in a more densely populated area. Of course, rural votes and voters matter, the point is so do urban ones and by dismissing CA and NY as Democratic anyhow, we’re ignoring that those citizens are well citizens.

There was a nasty bus crash this morning, and the details are still kinda hazy. Two buses collided in Queens - a NYC MTA bus and a private bus operator. Dozens were sent to the hospital, and 3 were killed. The private bus appears to have run a red light. The private bus ended up in a storefront as well. Major EMS presence:

A deadly herpes virus is threatening oysters around the world

Today a deadly herpes virus, Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1), is threatening Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas), the world’s most popular and valuable oyster species. It is almost certain to spread more widely in our globally connected world.

I know what you’re thinking: “Oysters get herpes??” Yes, and they can also can get sick from other types of pathogens and stresses. But you won’t contract this virus from eating an oyster, whether you enjoy them on the half-shell or cooked. OsHV-1 can infect other bivalve species, like some animal herpes viruses that can cross species barriers, but it is genetically distinct from other animal herpes viruses and does not infect humans.

Despite Epidemic, Insurers Restrict Non-Opioid Drugs

It all comes back to money. America’s opioid crisis, which has seen deaths from prescription drug overdoses quadruple since 2015, may be exacerbated by health plans that don’t cover alternatives that are less addictive but cost insurers more money. Almost every Medicare plan analyzed covered cheap, addictive opioids, which have become the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S., while far fewer covered alternatives or addiction treatment. Pharmaceutical companies pushing OxyContin and opioids have been fined hundreds of millions — but this new data raises questions about where responsibility lies.

Florida allows any resident to challenge textbooks — and it has some science supporters concerned

HB 989 allows any Florida resident to “challenge the use or adoption of instructional materials,” and its supporters say the law gives Floridians a greater say in what students are taught. But some in the scientific community worry the new law will be used to target evolution and climate change in classrooms.

“My group, Florida Citizens for Science, has been tracking this for quite some time now,” says Brandon Haught, a co-founder of the organization and a high school environmental science teacher.

Instead of eliminating the EC entirely, I’d prefer we just expand Congress. (which has been statutorily frozen at the same size it was in 1928, when the nation’s population was about 1/3 what it is now). Smaller districts would mean the EC would give smaller/sparser states a slightly disproportionate weight, instead of a massively disproportionate weight.

It’s not about “cake”, it’s about discrimination. We would never accept it as a society if someone denied people a good or product because of being Christian. So why should we accept it if someone is gay? Plus it’s setting up dangerous precedents where people think they can deny someone vital services because of their sexuality. It’s easy to go “Well just shop somewhere else.”

This is…somewhat odd. Sign language interpreter used gibberish, warned of bears, monsters during Hurricane Irma update

Officials in Manatee County, Florida are under fire after an interpreter for the deaf warned about pizza and monsters during an emergency briefing related to Hurricane Irma.

The interpreter, Marshall Greene, a lifeguard for the county, has a brother who is deaf, according to the DailyMoth, a video news site that provides information via American Sign Language. Greene was used as the interpreter for a Sept. 8 press conference regarding the incoming storm and possible evacuations.

Members of the deaf community said Greene mostly signed gibberish, referencing “pizza,” “monsters,” and using the phrase “help you at that time to use bear big,” during the event. Other information signed to viewers was incomplete, experts said.

The county typically uses interpreters from VisCom, a professional sign language interpreting service. VisCom owner Charlene McCarthy told local media she was not contacted about providing services for the press conference and that Greene was apparently not fluent in American Sign Language.

Casualty reports coming in:
College football player dies after complaining he felt sick during game

WOOSTER, Ohio — Officials say a football player at the College of Wooster has died after being hospitalized after a game Saturday when he complained he didn’t feel well.

A college spokesman says 21-year-old Clayton Gelb died Sunday afternoon at a hospital in Wooster. He was a senior offensive lineman on the team and a chemistry major at the school.

Spokesman Hugh Howard said he couldn’t provide any details about what caused Gelb’s death. Gelb started at right guard in Saturday’s 38-20 home win over Ohio Wesleyan University.

Okay, this guy was 21, he exercised constantly, and his health and physical condition were professionally monitored. Yet this is not a particularly unusual occurrence. It’s the game.

Can you be sure of that? I’m thinking it could be something like a heart problem.

I know people do not like football as much anymore, but what sports will be acceptable?

Do you know a lot of people die playing baseball too. How many cases of a kid getting hit in the chest with a pitch and it stops the heart are on record?

Basketball players have died from heart problems while playing or after a game sort of like what happened to the young man from Wooster College.

Two cases don’t prove anything, except that risk is not absolutely exclusive to football, a claim nobody has made.

It could be the same condition I have. It’s sad. A lot of people don’t know they have this condition until it’s too late. FWIW, my condition is Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I just can’t over exert myself. So I can and do exercise but I don’t do anything like competitive sports or marathon running.

danger here, just for a moment

we made it through irma just fine. got a fair amount of cleanup to do still
we got power, got the inside cleaned up and restocked some of the fridge.

no internet at home which for us also means no workable phones and so no email or surfing through them either. we do get some texts. dangermom has power, internet, tv, food, etc. like nothing happened 8 miles away.

mrs dm is working from starbucks

i’m auditing a client in st. lucie county so im hooked up today as well. but this is real work on a tight schedule so i cant stick around

thanks to one and all who responded or upvoted the status posts i was able to make. when one is cut off and sort of isolated even in a city, even with family, it feels good to know the roots are still connected. and i trust the rest of you in the path did ok too.

one day i may tell you the story of my all time favorite dive student from the days of 1994. last week, while im worrying about the hurricane, sending her updates where we are and what were going through, she had her colon and other parts surgically removed. a devastating and debilitating major surgery. didnt say a word about it until we were home safe.

be thankful for everything you have
do justice to the opportunity of your existence today.

Average 12 high school and college football players die each year, study says

The 243 deaths in total over 20 years work out to one for every 100,000 high school and college football players during that period.

High school athletes accounted for 203 of those deaths; but because there are so many more high school players, a college player was statistically almost three times more likely to die playing football than a high school player during the study period.

Two cases don’t prove anything, except that risk is not absolutely exclusive to football, a claim nobody has made.

Deadliest highschool sports

Researchers collected data from 1982 to 2011 for all high school sports and millions of high school athletes. Total fatality rates were then calculated per 100,000 participants.

The deadliest sport during this time had a fatality rate of 2.89 deaths per 100,000, which was more than double the second deadliest sport. Football was the fourth deadliest sport with a fatality rate of .81 per 100,000 participants.

Cheerleading, which has been shown to be the most dangerous activity based on injury data, was not included in the study because it was not classified as a sport.

Edit: For comparison, the rate in basketball which is the closest for number of participants is .76 per 100000. Soccer was .45.

If they have what #304 HappyWarrior has, I could see students being in really good shape and playing through their condition when they are young, and then getting to college and being hit by both how long they’ve overexerted themselves and how much the intensity of the game goes up in college.

Right and the thing about this condition is you don’t know if you’re tested. I was actually seriously considering going out for the high school freshman football team but my mom wanted me tested as her father had a murmur and sure enough, they found my condition which is worse than a murmur. You can be in top notch shape and have it. I’d recommend that any prospective athlete get themselves looked at before playing. especially in college and beyond.

Honest to god, that is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen. And we live in a time of really dumb things. Who would even write an article like that? Couple what you wrote with this drivel…

“Playful urination practices - from seeing how high you can pee to games such as Peeball (where men compete using their urine to destroy a ball placed in a urinal) - may give boys an advantage over girls when it comes to physics,” the academics wrote.

Shoot me now.

Deadliest highschool sports

Actual data referenced in that article
National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Data tables.
Note the admonition “Rates with number of incidents less than 5 should be interpreted with caution.”

The rates for the 2 sports that rank as deadlier than football, water polo and boys gymnastics, were based on such small sample sizes that a single death would seriously skew the rate. Specifically, there were 4 fatalities in water polo and 1 in gymnastics. There is no listing for “boys softball,” claimed as “deadlier than football” in your article, but there was a single death in girls softball.

Is that because African Americans are more likely to have those conditions, or because their pre-existing conditions are more likely to be undiscovered? Pretty sure any parent who knew their kid had heart trouble would have urged them to play violin, or chess, instead of football.

It’s the block grant funding. Sure Arizona loses a ton in Medicaid funding, but it gets the freedom to spend what it doesn’t on things only loosely related to medical care. That means more tax cuts.

Exactly, which means this is the GOP using the framework of the ACA to give their buddies bad home a shit-ton of money to use to spackle over huge gaps in their tax-starved budgets.

Graham Cassidy is the same warmed over Trumpcare tax scheme to gut health coverage for tens of millions of people. Trumpcare was a tax scheme because that was the goal - shift the tax burden from rich to everyone else.

Graham Cassidy is the same, but it goes after a different aspect of Medicaid to do it. It’s going to take massive amounts of funding from states that have been good at protecting their citizens and giving a portion of it to states that screwed their citizens over the years since Obamacare was enacted.

The balance gets pocketed by the rich.

It’s still a massive tax grab for the rich, and the burdens fall to everyone else - disporportionately those states that followed the law and did right by their residents.

And of course, it’s Lindsey Graham leading the pack from a state that turned down Medicaid expansion.

Like the earlier version of the Cassidy-Graham plan, the revised plan would disproportionately harm certain states. The block grant would not only cut overall funding for the Medicaid expansion and marketplace subsidies but also, starting in 2021, redistribute the reduced federal funding across states, based on their share of low-income residents rather than their actual spending needs. In general, over time, the plan would punish states that have adopted the Medicaid expansion or been more successful at enrolling low- and moderate-income people in marketplace coverage under the ACA. It would impose less damaging cuts, or even raise funding initially, for states that have rejected the Medicaid expansion or enrolled few low-income residents in marketplace coverage.
