If you still have the cd (drivers and utilities) for the danged printer, I suggest as someone stated above, remove (as in delete) all printers, unplug the usb cable from the printer to your computer, and then reinstall from scratch; just my $0.02.

I usually suggest for any device to go to the manufacturer’s web site and download the latest drivers. The CDs that come with them are usually obsolete by the time you get the box home.
And NEVER install a device driver from Microsoft Update! Go to the hardware manufacturer’s site.
(I did that for a disk controller, and the firmware got wiped. Fortunately my boot disk was on a different controller, so I could reboot and get to the manufacturer’s site to get the firmware and the latest driver.)
