The official count from the commission in the 90s was that Pinochet had something like 2,000 people executed for ‘political crimes’ during his entire multi-decade reign. I find it unlikely that hundreds of bodies were floating in rivers or stacked in caves at any one time. Pinochet’s murders were done in warehouses, prisons and police stations; not out in the streets.

Mrspanting tells me the bodies were retrieved at night but that people in their homes along the river would see them before they were fished out. There was a 24-hour curfew and those on the streets were subject to immediate death.
