The vast majority of the civilian deaths in Iraq were caused by 1) Car bombs or other IEDs; 2) Suicide bombers detonating themselves in crowds, or 3) AQI or Sunni militias shooting Shiites, or vice-versa.
With the exception of a few large-scale engagements, such as the assault on Fallujah or the original fighting against Saddam’s military back in 2003, Coalition forces have made very little use of artillery, mortars, or large-scale bombing, which is where you would expect to see large numbers of civilians killed.
