Let me add, too, that, for a fellow like myself, the colder climate up there improved my chances with the ladies. See, by the time I’m done layering on the trousers, dress shirt, sports coat, top coat, scarf, and soft hat, as worn, my slightly husky carriage goes more or less unnoticed. I’m one of those guys who, in a warmer climate, has a difficult time concealing my form. But in good cold-weather clothes, from the right tailor, I look like a million bucks, wrapped in cashmere.

Here in Texas, if I had to go looking for a bride, I’d be at a distinct disadvantage. The ability to wear a suit or sports coat with top coat and hat is not really an essential skill, and the ability to ingest large quantities of mixed drinks is looked at as a character flaw, and not, as it was in Beantown, as a social grace.
