What is this “nonpaying” bullshit. Why has this even become a “thing”?

I know right? Sucks but I’m finally getting my foot in the door at least. I don’t get why companies don’t pay interns more. I mean I don’t expect something like a starting salary but I think some salary is needed especially given that I’m doing full time work and needing money for my commute.
