The abuse of the 501(c)(3) tax exempt status is so widespread and rampant that its hard to imagine how to even fix it. You would think that the IRS would move in for the kill, but then the IRS is run by bureaucrats who ultimately have to answer to politicians. And politicians from both sides have supporters that claim the exemption so there will be no big push to end the abuse. Eventually though, someone will overplay their hand and get called for the bluff.
