He took his stage surname from Sale, according to Wikipedia, as his earlier radio name, Hines, sounded too much like the food brand.
I didn’t realize (or had forgotten) that Soupy had been on the air since the early ’50s. I knew him only from the WNEW-TV show of the mid-’60s.
Years back, I saw a show made up of out takes from Soupy’s time in Los Angeles. It was hilarious and included the legendary stripper surprise.
