Near bottom line. They hate having a black man in the White House, but with a few exceptions, they cannot bring themselves to say that in public in so many words.

That makes these people highly receptive to any sort of unfounded birtherist/Manchurian candidate/secret Muslim rumor-mill grist that puts Obama in a bad light.

I don’t think a lot of them can actually see it in themselves. “They are good people, they can’t be racist” So, it has to be something else, like the alcoholic who refuses to see that alcohol is the problem. He says it’s the brand of beer or that he didn’t eat dinner, or the sky was the wrong shade of blue… .
