Not just home defense but defense of others as well. In some cases a rifle is better suited to stopping an attack than a handgun. Moreover, semi-auto rifles are used far less often in crimes than handguns so that someone wants one shouldn’t represent a problem if that person isn’t a crazy.

But on a fundamental level you’ve got it backwards: People who own semi-auto rifles shouldn’t have to justify why they should permitted to own them, those who want to ban such rifles should have to explain the necessity of such a ban.

Most people don’t commit crimes with tanks, hand grenades, and rocket launchers. For that matter, I haven’t blown up anything. Can I have dynamite?
