My point is that, while folks seem to label him a liberal, his opinions, both in the majority and in the minority aren’t that liberal. Moderate seems more the appropriate label. (Much like Dean Kagan.) I don’t think folks give him enough credit for actually considering the cases, rather than just voting for the “liberal” or “conservative” position.

Conservatives are unhappy with him and were unhappy with Justice Souter about their positions on abortion. They’ve both been reliable votes to keep the status quo, and to strike down attempts to restrict access to abortions beyond those allowed by Roe v. Wade.

That alone was enough to get them both labeled as liberals and despised by some on the right. But one issue does not a liberal make.

Still, it will be interesting to see what happens.
