I think it’s because fewer percentage wise Americans have served than in the past. Not to mention the nuances about Vietnam and the Gulf Wars.

I served during the Persian Gulf War (but not in the theatre of combat, I was in Spain). Does that count? (Also Bosnia off the coast, pulling our Marines out from Lebanon, &c)
