Because there’s a difference between someone who drinks and someone who is an alcoholic. Alcoholism is an addiction and pretending that people with addictions are fine because they’re somehow “functional” (when that’s basically a euphemism for “not sloppy”) is not helpful.

Doesn’t the term just say that the person drinks to excess and is actually impaired most (all?) of the time but can fool the outsider who doesn’t know him. If Kavanaugh still drinks excessively and that becomes public knowledge, even McConnell would probably no longer support him. “Functional” basically just means the disguise works.
