Yes, but that is not the point. As a matter of protocol, any national delegate has the right to speak in their own native tongue. It was the President of the meeting who needed the translation, hence the break. It was not the Chinese delegate who demanded the break, he didn’t have to, all he had to do was speak his native tongue. I suppose the President of the meeting could have just let him continue, but as everyone knows that the key difficulty is getting the Chinese and Americans on the same page, it makes little sense in letting one of the key nations not be able to understand the other.

There is more going on under the hood… but it was, how can we say, a convenient move.

Diplomacy is a subtle art.
