I saw a werewolf drinkin a pina colada at Trader Vic’s

You know, I don’t care much for the Grateful Dead, but a friend of mine was a huge Deadhead and dragged me to a concert when they were in Detroit many years ago. During their opening set, they did a cover of Werewolves of London, and it totally rocked the house. They were tight, gave it an upbeat tempo, and the crowd was roaring when they finished.

Then they went backstage for half an hour, came back, and couldn’t all stay in the same key for the rest of the night, bleating out hour after hour of random, incoherent stoner ad-libs.

Too bad. Especially when those few short moments before the drugs took hold proved they could actually play really damn well, when they weren’t lit up like Christmas trees.
