Lincoln clearly believed that Jefferson’s vision that “all men are created equal”, and that they all have “inalienable rights”, was universal, and not constrained. And that is the point about which Americans have argued ever since.

Lincoln understood that if the public contract (the Constitution) could be broken at will, then it would fail completely. He forced that the contractual obligation be maintained. If it hadn’t been, then it was worthless, meaningless. This is what the paulbots want to do- break the contract to re-establish it. It would have no meaning though, because it’s breakable.
