Birtherism is a good example but I no longer believe it’s rooted in racism. There’s plenty of good examples of right wing racism but overblown accusations of racism have become lefty tribalist intensifiers. I’m no longer on board.

If there’s no racism/xenophobia involved, how would you explain the fact that none of our previous presidents were hounded by questions about their birth certificates?

It’s just coincidence that Obama is the first one to have to deal with such nonsense? Pretty doubtful. Call it racism, call it xenophobia, whatever…but don’t pretend this would be happening to a white guy named John Smith (or Mitt Romney, as he proudly pointed out a few days back).
