Get him something cheap and let him abuse the hell out of it. I still have my first guitar which was bought for me in 2nd or 3rd grade. I put firecrackers inside it and beat on it with drumsticks. When I took up an interested in lutherie in my mid 20’s I ripped off the fingerboard and developed my own interchangeable microtonal fingerboards with various scales. I just went to the basement and dug it out. I’m playing it now. Big fun after all these years.
