Our drug laws are pretty messed up. It also didn’t help that the defendant is black and poor. If it had been a white suburban mom doing that it probably would have been a slap on the wrist.

All it takes is being poor. If you have to depend on a PD you’re screwed. We always had a bunch of guys from the county work release working at the shop. One of the guys got pulled over (license plate light out) and after searching the (borrowed) truck they found 1 non-narcotic prescription pill underneath a seat and they charged him with a felony. Prosecutors know they can push you to accept a plea on bs charges if you don’t have a private attorney.
