He has a point. Gun control advocates quite often look the other way at very poor laws in an effort to “do something” especially after a high profile shooting. Legit gun owners input dismissed as NRA propaganda etc.

Or pull off a slow motion ban like California has done. In a couple years no handgun will be legal for sale here as it lacks certain legally required technology that does not yet exist (well played Sacramento!) and will not help law enforcement even if it did.
