Rand Paul on Trump: “Someone Has to Point Out to the American Public That He’s a Fake”

A poignant cry from the right
Politics • Views: 54,148

Rand Paul’s campaign is pretty much running on fumes at this point, and this quote almost made me feel sad for him — because he obviously understands he’s being whipped by a creepy charlatan.

Of course, some people might point out that Rand Paul is a bit of a creepy charlatan himself. But Donald Trump is the miserable dead end of modern conservatism, and he’s stepping in and leveraging all the hard work people like Rand Paul put into debasing the right wing electorate, without paying for it himself. The conservative base has been primed for a demagogue like Donald Trump for years, and now the GOP establishment can only watch in horror as he makes them all look like fools.

UPDATE at 9/12/15 6:27:42 pm by Charles Johnson

Meanwhile, here’s Trump’s take on Rand’s flailing:

In other words, Trump is doing what so many corporations do today, in trying to monetize the work someone else has done, without paying them for it.

Jennifer Rubin, May 30 2015:

How many times has Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., falsely suggested the National Security Agency is listening to the content of millions of phone calls? Before reversing himself, he also gave support to the anti-vaccine hooey. At what point do voters say, “You know, that’s not the mind-set or character of someone who we’d want as president.”
…..snip….
On one level it is amusing, but it is also a sign that social media have made it increasingly easy for charlatans and con men to gain an audience.

Worse, it also debases our political culture, hampers serious debate and further erodes self-governance itself.

Another one trying to survive the Trump steamroller:

Walker looks to be more ‘aggressive’ at CNN debate

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is preparing to ditch his Midwestern-nice persona and show a sharper edge at the CNN Republican debate next week.

“I think we’re going to step it up and be more aggressive this time,” Walker told CNN Saturday, in between playing a game of cornhole and meeting tailgaters ahead of Iowa’s biggest football rivalry: the Iowa/Iowa State game.

“I really hope to be aggressive and make the case that we’re ready to wreak havoc on Washington,” Walker added.

[…]

Because that is what Republicans want - havoc in DC.

In an exclusive interview with the Post-Dispatch this evening, presidential candidate Rand Paul used some of his strongest language yet in attacking GOP rival Donald Trump, calling the real estate mogul “juvenile” and “dangerous” and comparing him to a swaggering teenager.

At one point in the interview, Paul broke into a Trump impersonation, mimicking his throaty New York accent.

“‘Ah, I’m so rich, I’ve got to be smart, look at me, I’m successful,’” said Paul, impersonating Trump.

“It’s like, really? Is that the level of our discourse? I think, ultimately people are going to wake up and say, ‘You know what, we had an infatuation with a celebrity, but now that we know he’s a fake and he’s not really conservative, we’re really not going to have someone as juvenile as that running our country.’”

I think this is hilarious since these guys have all poisoned the level of discourse themselves. Has Rand forgotten when his supporters stomped on a woman? Has Bobby forgotten that he threatened the POTUS not to talk about Climate Change at the Katrina anniversary ceremony? I mean these guys do have legitimate criticisms of Trump but it’s just so hollow coming from them. Trump is the result of what professional politicians like Paul and Jindal have been doing to the GOP base for years. They’re just angry because the base likes him and not them.

Another wannabe:

Carly Fiorina: Trump’s an ‘Entertainer,’ I’m a ‘Leader’

Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina Saturday responded further to Donald Trump’s recent derisive comments about her appearance in response to a question about the businessman’s contributions to the level of discourse in the 2016 presidential race.

“I think Donald Trump is an entertainer. And I think I am a leader,” she told reporters after speaking to a crowd at the Strafford County BBQ & Beer Bash in Dover, New Hampshire. “What I do is talk to the American people about the issues that I care about and I think they hear what I’m talking about.”

She confirmed that she does not plan on asking Trump to apologize for his comments because “there’s a long line of people asking him to apologize.”

Trump isn’t some kind of astounding aberration from what’s been sold to the electorate for years: hyperbole, empty bellicosity, and prominent streak of anti-intellectualism that is nonetheless elitist.

Donald Trump is not the pusher-man who got your base hooked on bullshit. He”s just developed a more efficient delivery method for a purer product.

Among highly anticipated new emojis like the taco and unicorn, the faithful will also have more to choose from. The new release includes a synagogue, a mosque and even the Kaaba, the black cubical structure in Mecca that serves as Islam’s most famous and significant house of God.

There will also a be a Jewish menorah with nine branches, prayer beads, and a generic symbol of a person on his knees, signifying a place of worship. There had long been several Christian church emojis to choose from. […]

My on-again, off-again boyfriend (currently off-again) is convinced that Trump will flame out and pass his followers on to Ted Cruz.

One reason my boyfriend is “off-again” is because he doesn’t like to hear my response, which is, “yay, the return of the religious wars in Europe, this time imported to America!” He also doesn’t like to hear me talk about leaving the country. And yes, I have talked about leaving the country, because Ted and his dad Rafael have some very radical religious beliefs. It would be an uncomfortable time, even with the checks and balances.

Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul stressed his conservative principles and his desire to enforce all ten of the amendments in the Bill of Rights at three stops Saturday morning.

The Kentucky senator offered a slew of attacks for his political rivals vying for the same nomination, alleging that they have been unwilling to deliver on all the same principles.

Speaking of Gov. Jeb Bush, Paul accused his father and brother of failing to scale back the size of government, citing President George H.W. Bush’s increase of taxes in 1991 and President George W. Bush’s support for the Iraq War, which brought about a surge in military spending and a supposed softening of Fourth Amendment rights as a means of countering terrorism.

At a stop in Marshalltown, Paul pointed to Trump’s support for eminent domain as a means of suggesting his platform lacks any constitutional inspiration.

“That’s his business model, and he’s also said he supports the Supreme Court decision that allowed that. There’s nothing really conservative about that so I continue to tell people that I think he’s a fake conservative,” Paul asserted of Trump’s use of eminent domain while in the private sector.

The hilarious thing about Trump campaign is it’s the Emperor’s New Clothes of GOP internal politics. Much time and energy into gussying up and justifying the various vices and -isms of appealing to the base, making them sound like “serious” policy. You can’t look at a transcript of a Trump interview or Q&A and claim he’s focused or on point. He’s a full-on patent medicine salesman, all gleaming generalities, big emotions, and theatrical contempt for the “losers” that question. He routinely says nothing.

Even if—and personally, I think its when—Trump quits, the success of his performance demonstrates something about the bloc that likes him: that you can’t put a merkin on their utter credulousness and pretend that there’s some deep, thoughtful undercurrent that’s driving their anger and acting-out.

Yeah I think Trump’s popularity says a lot about the GOP base. The establishment has to be wondering about the monster they’ve created. But they’ve always known this. Bush’s re-election was boosted by the state GOPs putting anti-gay marriage referendums on the ballot to get out the Fundie base to vote for so they know that hatred sells to their base.

Why Russians Hate America. Again.

[…]

Intellectuals pointed me to books on Berlin in the 1920s and the concept of “ressentiment,” a philosophical term that describes a simmering resentment and sense of victimization arising out of envy of a perceived enemy. It often has its roots in a culture’s feeling of impotence. In Berlin in the early 20th century, it helped explain the rise of German fascism. In Russia in August, it seemed to have many targets: Ukraine, gay people, European dairy products and above all the United States.

“America stuffs its democracy in our face,” bellowed a cabdriver named Kostya in the city of Nizhny Novgorod. (His main beef was with the “propaganda of pederasts,” using a derogatory word used to describe homosexuals, a few weeks after the Supreme Court’s approval of gay marriage.) “If you’re saying yes, yes, yes, all the time and nodding your head, well sometimes you have to say no,” he said, explaining that Russia had finally stood up to the United States.

[…]

“Ressentiment” also describes well wingnut America and the current GOP political circus.

Not noticed by many but is part of the big picture:

US oil output to collapse next year on low prices - IEA

Lower oil prices will force non-Opec producers including the US to cut output by the steepest rate in more than two decades next year, rebalancing an oversupplied oil market, the International Energy Agency said yesterday.

The IEA, which advises the world’s biggest economies on energy policy, said global oil demand was poised to climb to a five-year high this year thanks to lower prices.

[…]

The report is one of the most bullish for Opec since the group shocked markets last year by deciding against cutting production, choosing to fight for market share and depress the output of higher-cost producers such as the US.

[…]

“Oil’s price collapse is closing down high-cost production from Eagle Ford in Texas to Russia and the North Sea, which may result in the loss next year of half a million barrels a day - the biggest decline in 24 years.”

The projected drop in output would be the largest since 1992, when non-Opec supply contracted by one million barrels per day (bpd) from the previous year, with the collapse of the former Soviet Union.

[…]

The IEA said it now expected US light, tight oil production to shrink by 0.4 million bpd next year after expanding by a record 1.7 million bpd in 2014.

[…]

Before the market rebalances in the second half of 2016, global inventories - already at record levels - will continue to grow and put further pressure on oil prices.

And by the time markets begin to rebalance, Iranian oil could return in big volumes if sanctions are lifted. Iran’s crude exports have fallen from roughly 2.2 million bpd at the start of 2012 to around one million bpd in August.

Jeffrey Robert MacDonald (born October 12, 1943) is an American convicted in 1979 for the murders of his pregnant wife and two daughters in February 1970. At the time of the murders, MacDonald was a U.S. Army officer (Special Forces Green Beret), medical doctor, and practicing physician. MacDonald maintains that a group of Charles Manson-type hippies committed the crimes and has filed several unsuccessful appeals attempting to overturn his convictions.

Letters to Donald, Part 6:

September 12, 2015
His Holyness Dr. Donald Trump
New York, NY

Dear Dr. Trump:

I’m writing this time because I had yet another brilliant idea for your campaign (you get the benefit of not only my innermost thoughts, but also my outermost and middlemost thoughts as well!).

You were all over the TV this week with your wonderful “winning” quote where you said “We will have so much winning if I get elected that you may get bored with winning.” I don’t know why anybody thinks you need to have detailed plans when you can come up with stuff like that off the top of your head!

Anyway, I had this idea that goes hand-in-hand with your winning quote, but I’m sure you are probably way, way ahead of me on this one. You may remember that I originally suggested that Sarah Palin be your Vice President, but on reflection I’m not so sure that’s a good idea. “Bristol’s mom has got it going on,” if you get my drift. Although I would certainly welcome it, I think the country may not be quite ready for a little “Trumpalin” in the White House. We wouldn’t want to make Mrs. Trump mad!

So my idea is this: Who better a Vice Presidential choice to drive across your “so much winning” quote than the original “winning” quotester? You know who I’m talking about: That’s right, Mr. Hollywood legend himself, Charlie Sheen!

I firmly believe that if you examine ALL the evidence, you’ll reach the same conclusion I did: Charlie Sheen can deliver not one, not two, but THREE important voting blocs: 1) Women; 2) Latinos; and 3) Drunks.

You really only need to keep a tight lid on him until the election—if he overdoses after that, you can probably hire back that guy you’re always firing. Hey, I’ll bet that’s where you perfected your famous “YOUR FIIIIIIIIRED!” quote!

I was also thinking that you might get Trump University involved in some sort of Voter Outreach Program, voter education program, something like that where people can get informed of the really important issues of the day, like immigration and Tom Brady. I’ll bet the faculty at ol’ TU would be champing at the bit to get a piece of that action! (Speaking of which, I went to your web site to register for classes but I got something called the Trump Entrepreneur Initiative instead. I’m not sure, but it sounds to me like someone is trying to steal your thunder, so you might want to keep a watchful eye on that. It sounds like a Big Bang Theory episode! “The Doofus Loofus Experiment,” or “The Invertebrate Potato Conundrum” or “The Trump Entrepreneur Initiative.” I’d almost say it was a few nonsensical words randomly grouped together in order to convey something meaningful if it wasn’t YOU we were talking about!)

Respectfully,

Bong J. Crodny
Your #2 Fan
P.S. - Vote Donald — and think “V.D.!”

P.S.S. Here’s another great idea. When you get elected and take possession of the White House, you should issue one of those proclamations changing the address of your magnificence. “One Billion Pennsylvania Street” is more appropriate for someone of your stature, wouldn’t you agree?

P.S.S.S. You don’t have to pay me for that one, either.

That isn’t the first time Trump’s been associated with a military picture that wasn’t properly vetted. Back in July Trumps campaign put up a composite image which featured a sub-image of soldiers marching. Only they were WWII reenactors, not soldiers. Donald Trump’s campaign needs to vet its images better.

It’s also an attempt to build a legend of having “stood bravely in the face of the Tyrant Fool Bush”. Because those making this piece of crud seem to think that admitting Dan Rather bought into a fake story because he wanted it to be true and hoped to would help defeat George W. Bush would be like saying they all supported carpet bombing Iraq.

Lawmakers Who Hailed 9/11 Heroes Still Shun Bill To Help Them

The old law to help those responders passed nearly five years ago. It begins expiring next month, yet legislation to extend that aid remains stuck in Congress. More than a dozen lawmakers threw their support behind the bill over the last week, but that brings the numbers to only 145 out of 435 House members and 37 of 100 senators.

That’s far fewer than the majority required to pass a long-term version of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, and head off interruptions in care to more than 33,000 ill 9/11 responders around the country.

Yet many of the legislators who wrapped themselves in declarations of “Never Forget” on the Friday anniversary are among those who have not backed the bill, or even voted against the original measure.

I was in a bonafide touring punk rock band before I graduated high school, we were called The Stiffies. I played lead guitar and harmony vocals. Those were some days, man! We opened for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones in Denver and toured Colorado with Guttermouth. Punk rock will always course through my veins because of that crazy/amazing part of my life.

We broke up after less than a year, the drummer and lead singer/guitarist were brothers, you see, and they didn’t get along. Our last gig, in Vail, CO, we were fired about three or four songs into the set because the brothers got into a fist fight on the stage in the middle of a performance. So punk rock!

My cousin was in a funk band for a little while. They broke up. It was too bad. They were talented enough to be invited to perform at the 9:30 Club. I found out latter that the lead guitarist/lead singer was a bit of a diva though. Hoping my cousin stays with music though. He’s a talented bassist. I always wish I had musical talent but my dexterity issues along with having a difficult time reading music would make it difficult for me. I am just here to enjoy the music others. That’s crazy that they got into a fist fight though.

Trump’s right. Rand is an even shittier candidate than his dad Ron. At least Ron could raise money, and always count on 10-15% of the Republican base lining up to cheer for him and his libertarian nonsense.

But Rand can’t even reach that admittedly low bar. I think it’s because he’s trying to appeal to his father’s crowd while simultaneously appealing to the gop establishment. He’s failed on both counts, so nobody’s interested in him now. Also he’s a total douchebag and most people have now recognized it.

The New Bostonians: How Immigrants Have Transformed the Metro Region Since the 1960s
By Marilynn S. Johnson, Boston College
University of Massachusetts Press, August 2015
thenewbostonians.com

On the New Bostonian Facebook page, Dr. Johnson relates how she managed to track down the immigrants on the cover of her book.

How I Discovered New Bostonians in My Own Backyard…

For months now I’ve been trying to find out the identity of the immigrants featured on the cover of my book. Today I learned who two of them are: Yasin Aden and his daughter Anisa Yasin—the two Somalis shown in the photo’s foreground. I found them thanks to Asahar Iman—shown with me in this photograph. Asahar works at the Goddard House in Brookline, an assisted living residence where my father lives. Asahar is on the nursing staff there and saw the book in my father’s walker. Needless to say, she was surprised to see her father and sister on the cover.

This morning we met and I learned a bit about her family. They are originally from Mogadishu where ongoing wars and instability have forced many to flee in the past two decades. Asahar left with her mother and siblings in 2000. They went initially to Ethiopia and later to Pakistan. Eventually they were able to come as refugees to the United States, where they settled in Boston. Asahar’s father arrived a few years later, and he and his daughter Anisa were sworn in as citizens at a ceremony at Fenway Park in 2008. This is where the cover photograph was taken.

Here’s the cover of the book, showing Yasin Aden and his daughter Anisa Yasin at the citizenship ceremony in Fenway Park.

It goes without saying here, of course, that all three of these Somalis have become American in the very basic sense of joining the community of Boston, getting jobs and building their future in their new homeland — the same as every immigrant to American shores has, no matter their national origin.

Bigots will look at the head coverings and assume they are terrorists or participants in some nefarious Muslim plot to impose Sharia law on the USA. Fear of immigrants is nothing new in the United States, but somehow I had hoped that, by the dawn of the 21st century, we could put that sort of nonsense behind us. It really pisses me off that Trump has used nativism and fear as part of his campaign. Sure, he has brought it out into the open, but wouldn’t a better strategy been to embrace the immigrant vote, rather than antagonize those voters? That’s what a real leader would have done, instead of a carnival show barker pandering to the basest elements of American voters.

A follow-up on the Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota family murder/suicide:

On Saturday afternoon, investigators estimated that the deaths occurred late Monday night or early Tuesday morning and said they had not determined a motive in the killings. Earlier in the day, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office released confirmation of the family members’ names and causes of death. Each died of a shotgun wound to the head.

Brian Short’s fatal injury is described as “self-inflicted.” The medical examiner said the time of death was listed as 12:07 p.m. Thursday, which is when the bodies were discovered.

Siitari again on Saturday asked for the public’s patience as police investigate what is being described as a complex and “gruesome” case. “There are many moving parts in an investigation of this magnitude,” he said.

As to a motive, nothing yet from the authorities. The only apparent trouble Mr. Short faced was described as:

He was facing a federal lawsuit from a New Jersey-based company, although it is unclear whether it posed much of a legal or financial threat to his business. In the lawsuit, Achieve Test Prep alleged that AllNurses failed to delete anonymous defamatory comments from its website and was sending business to a competitor.

The suit was filed in New Jersey, but on Aug. 28, the judge ordered that the case be moved to Minnesota.

This (to me, at least) may hint at a possible motive - some kind of financial trouble.

A couple of 17-year-old Cole’s friends told the Star Tribune this week that Cole had told them the family was planning to sell the house soon because it was too big for them.

About three months ago, the family abruptly ended weekly cleaning services with Polina’s Cleaning Services. The family had paid for the service for about seven months.

“It was really strange; out of nowhere they said they were stopping,” said company representative Roman Peysakhovich. When he asked Karen Short why, she gave no reason, he said.

startribune.com

ETA: I came across this related article, which leads me to think that sadly, finances (a struggling business on Mr. Short’s part) played a part in this gruesome crime.

Kaitlyn Ancello, of Minotola, N.J., a friend of Cole’s on Facebook, said she spoke with the teen over the phone and over Skype frequently after they became friends playing video games across the Internet about a year ago. Cole loved his family, his friends and his dog, she said, and they exchanged photos of their pets. He seemed to come from a nice, well-to-do family, she said.

They often vented to each other about their daily lives, Ancello said, and frequently played video games when Cole wasn’t working at a local pet store. His sister Brooklyn sometimes played, too, Ancello said, though she never really spoke to her.

Ancello was shocked to learn that her friend across the country had been killed. The last time she spoke to Cole on the phone — Saturday or Sunday, she thought — he wasn’t very talkative: “He seemed like not in the mood, I think he was upset they were moving soon.”

Cole had told her that the family had to move because his dad’s business was not going well and was losing money and they were struggling financially, Ancello said.

Ancello said Cole didn’t know where they were going to move, but thought it would be to a different house with a smaller mortgage in the same area.

I presume Ms. Ancello will be interviewed by the authorities, as well as others. That will most likely shed light on what led up to this grim massacre.

I would imagine that (if indeed it’s true) facing the possibility of business failure as well as having to downsize to a smaller home with a less expensive mortgage would have engendered feelings of failure and inadequacy in Mr. Short, which in turn, might have led to act out in the fashion he did in order to spare the family the “shame” of failure or a perception of “poverty”.

It’s twisted thinking to say the least, and I’m basing that supposition on the case of John List, who massacred his family for somewhat similar reasons, though Mr. List didn’t kill himself, he went on the lam for a couple of decades before being apprehended. As I recall, the capture of John List was one of the first major successes of America’s Most Wanted, which was a new show at the time on the (then) fledgeling Fox Network.

Financial failure is perceived as one of the worst things imaginable to many Americans. Even if they are not active church people, the whole success shows you are of the elect heresy pervades our subconscious as does the correlary: failure proves that you are not Godly. Very sad, indeed.

You’re quite right; for a good number of Americans, death would be preferable to financial failure. Sad but true.

I mean, how do you define success? Is it personal satisfaction, is it money? The answer is money!

That’s the dark, honest truth. I would say 70 percent of people who are in therapy are in therapy not because of their upbringing, not because of their mean sister or obsessions, but because of anxiety brought about by lack of financial security. I didn’t understand that until I had a measure of financial security which, by rights, I should have because I am trained as a literary theoretician that worked in book publishing, then worked in magazine publishing as a freelance writer. By rights, I should be dead in a gutter right now.

Milo quotes Kluwe’s response to him:

Chris Kluwe was the only supporter to respond. He sent the following, incomprehensible comment: “I have difficulty believing any claims from a journalist who sources not only from obvious satire sites as a primary source (ED), not only from hacked records of dubious provenance that have been shown to be recently altered, but also publishes stories based on unvetted information from terrorists. Your story is as much ‘news’ as the drunken ramblings of a street corner doomsayer.”

Kluwe is outright lying though. The provenance of most of the main sources is excellent - straight from Nyberg’s site, from her postings at forums and LJ and, most importantly, never denied by Nyberg herself. The primary sources are not ED but rather various web archival services which are completely neutral.

Not in our lifetime, and perhaps never. A man’s family is deeply connected to his feelings of self-worth, and that’s not a connection easily broken.

re: #251 Romantic Heretic

I think it’s also part of this whole “I am the man, I make the money, I make the rules and I do what I want” mindset. Money makes you the head of the household, without it, you are powerless, or with less of it you have less power. I’m contending with that attitude in my house right now(minus the danger, just to be clear), and let’s just say it’s not flying very well. Men talk to each other about this stuff and reinforce it. Nevermind that I spent 22 yrs raising an autistic young man and spent huge amounts of time giving him the therapies he needed myself, with no training. If someone had to pay for that help he wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss it. Someone’s friends have wives with careers that “contribute something” whereas I apparently haven’t. And I’m not trying hard enough to find a shitty job, because the world is totally seeking out women over 55 who’ve been out of the workforce for 20 plus years. I’m trying to start my own business, but it’s not going well. It’s hard to do that with little money and no family or friend support.

I guess I don’t get it because I’ve never been rich. Having less money, as much as say, most people have, isn’t the end of the world. This guy put a dollar amount on the lives of everyone closest to him and himself. It’s not just sad, it’s COMMON thinking. Look at how we treat the poor or people who need help. Like they’re taking something from those who really “deserve” it. Or even people who work and don’t make a lot of money, but they still work and still try hard to support themselves and oftentimes a family. It makes me so sad. Our priorities are fucked, and it results in life seeming cheap unless your bank account says you’re “worth something”.

It’s that Protestant Calvinist work ethic mentioned above, combined with the Horatio Alger mythos, and the male ego. It’s a volatile mix, and people who are desperate often find it hard to find other solutions to what may seem overwhelming obstacles, and just pop.

Then there are people who survive and rebuild. I read about a guy who was a successful ad executive, who was downsized out of a job. In his late 50s, he had trouble finding any job at all, surprisingly. He lost his house, his vacation home, his cars, his boat, and his wife. He was offered a job as a barista at Starbucks, and he took it. He wrote about it, and said despite the radical change in his lifestyle, he actually enjoyed his new job. Less stress, more fun.

DEBT

Graeber shows that arguments about debt and debt forgiveness have been at the center of political debates from Italy to China, as well as sparking innumerable insurrections. He also brilliantly demonstrates that the language of the ancient works of law and religion (words like “guilt,” “sin,” and “redemption”) derive in large part from ancient debates about debt, and shape even our most basic ideas of right and wrong. We are still fighting these battles today without knowing it.

They are entitled to their opinion, but there is no way for anyone (absent a direct intervention by God) to prove that they represent the one true interpretation of Christianity, or even that there is one such interpretation. Plus there is the fact that everyone cherrypicks the Bible and other Christian writings and reinterpret the places they don’t like. So there is no objectively “Christian behavior”.

From what I can see, no religion is free from it. It’s honestly one of the things that turns me off most about religion. My philosophy is pretty simple. We should all be free in our own way to find life’s meaning and if that includes God, Gods, or no gods at all so be it. I’m agnostic but if believing in a God gives you comfort, I won’t stop you unless you’re trying to trample on other people’s liberty and rights in the process like Kim Davis is.

Very true. The Christianity of our grandparents generations was very outwardly antisemitic for example. I think the RCC only got rid of the official blame of the Jews for the death of Christ in Vatican II. But yeah while I do appreciate liberal Christians and liberal adhoerents of any religion, I do think they need to know they are the exception not the rule. There have been plenty of people who went through all the motions of Christianity every day and then would order the deaths of people without a second thought. I think the reason why you see this though is simple nature. “They’re going to accuse me of not being a real Christian, well I’ll do the same to them.”

This story is from Thursday, but I got a big kick out of it:

David Brock: The New York Times has ‘a special place in hell’

David Brock’s war against the New York Times just went nuclear — and the paper is responding with equal fury.

Brock, the former right-wing journalist-turned-pro-Clinton crusader, takes aim at a top New York Times editor in a soon-to-be released book obtained by POLITICO. In the book, titled “Killing the Messenger: The Right-Wing Plot to Derail Hillary Clinton and Hijack Your Government,” Brock accuses senior politics editor and former Washington bureau chief Carolyn Ryan of helping to turn the paper into a “megaphone for conservative propaganda” by unfairly targeting former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The founder of liberal watchdog groups Media Matters and Correct the Record casts Bill and Hillary Clinton, whom he tormented in the 1990s as a reporter with the American Spectator, as personal and political angels who offered him access to some of the Democratic Party’s biggest donors.

But he uses the book as a platform to attack the Times — whose editorial board endorsed Clinton over Barack Obama in 2008 — over its approach towards the Clintons from the Whitewater investigations of the 1990s to the current coverage of Hillary Clinton’s private email server.

In reality, David Brock is still a paid attack dog, attacking the New York Times to try to take heat off of Hillary Clinton and bolster her diminished poll numbers. Good Luck with that one David, but you just keeping tryin’ to storm ‘Castle NYT’. I’ll bring the popcorn.

On no, I’m not saying I would support Trump for President; it would be a disaster. I’m just pointing out that he is exploiting a gap between what GOP voters actually want and what the GOP elites who bankroll the GOP want. Almost no-one wants Social Security and Medicare cut, especially not the GOP Base who depend on those programs or will soon, but most GOP politicians have to support cuts to Social Security and Medicare because that is what the people who write the checks want.

The latest on the refugee crisis here in Europe:

Germany is to reintroduce border controls and will exit temporarily from the Schengen system, according to media reports, after the country’s regions said they could no longer cope with the overwhelming number of refugees arriving from Austria.

According to Der Spiegel, the interior minister, Thomas de Maizière, is poised to announce new restrictive measures at a press conference in Berlin later on Sunday. They include shutting the country’s borders, sending hundreds of additional police officers to Bavaria and allowing entry to Germany only with a valid passport.

The emergency measures are designed to give some respite to Germany’s federal states who are responsible for looking after refugees. There is also discussion inside the government about sending troops to the border with Austria, to reinforce security, Der Spiegel reports.

There’s a meeting coming up tomorrow (Monday) regarding the crisis:

Faymann suggested that if no consensus was reached on Monday in Brussels, Germany and its allies could try to force through a vote on quotas with a qualified majority. He also warned that Austria and Germany - both net contributors to the EU budget - would consider sanctions against countries stubbornly refusing to share the refugee burden.

This might include axing some EU structural funds from which “east European states profit most of all”, Faymann said. As well as quotas, Juncker’s proposal includes establishing hotspots at EU frontiers, including Greece and Italy, where refugees can be registered under a unitary system.

Great Britain already has an opt-out, so even if Germany and Austria forced through quotas by simple majority vote, it won’t effect the UK one iota. Granted, it might harden anti-EU attitudes in Britain. I think Denmark also has an opt-out from any refugee quotas as well.

I took a little time-out to think a bit more about my statements. If claiming a label was all it took to be part of Christianity or the Democratic party, then the labels are meaningless. And they probably are anyway. I can claim to be any number of things that are not controlled by mathematics or science (I couldn’t claim to be a woman in any place other than the internet, for instance).

I think Fugelsang’s statement was OK. Because let’s try the non-exclusion version:

As a Christian, she is not doing the things that Jesus said people should do: being kind to others, not judging them, not divorcing - haha. She’s a Christian not being a Christian.

It would be like claiming to be a cyclist because you own a bike. Of course you can claim it, but if you’re not training, I’m pretty sure no professional is going to claim you are.

Ultimately what we’re getting in trouble with is what labels like Christian and Democrat mean. Christian has multiple meanings, and even though I’m an atheist, Fugelsang’s implied definition is closer to what I imagined the term to mean when I was part of the faith. Davis is definitely not a “do not cast stones” Christian.

This is pretty interesting, actually:

“We conducted research on kitchen culture, food and bread of Anatolian-Hittite cuisine dating back 4,000 years,” he said. Akkor added that the food was cooked by imitating the period’s conditions. “Ancient settlers wrote that they ate cold meat, cooked onion and bread on a festival day. They did not use yeast while making bread or cook them in moist ovens. The team tried to make it with pounded wheat, not sifted flour,” he said.

Also…..

During the excavations, findings about olive oil, honey, beverages and vegetables were also discovered. Underlining the hygienic measures taken in Hittite kitchens, Akkor said if a chef with a large, unmanaged beard or long, unmanaged hair cooks in the kitchen or an animal wandered into the kitchen, he or she used to receive a death penalty along with their family. The rule was valid for those who cooked without having a bath beforehand. “These rules show how the Hittites took sanitary issues very seriously 4,000 years ago,” he said.

Yeeesh……tough crowd, those Hittites. That’s taking food safety to a whole new level.

Refugees are not by and large permanently emigrating. They’re seeking temporary shelter. Yes, many will find new homes in their host countries and some assholes will have problems with that, but the crisis takes precedence. Soon the weather will begin to turn toward cooler temperatures and tens of thousands of people sleeping outside in the rain isn’t great optics. The EU is not just an economic entity. It really is a community. And that’s why so many EU countries are doing the right thing, and those that are moving slower are seeing their own people say, “What the fuck?”

Or pull off a slow motion ban like California has done. In a couple years no handgun will be legal for sale here as it lacks certain legally required technology that does not yet exist (well played Sacramento!) and will not help law enforcement even if it did.

Which might be true if a lot of the laws being proposed only existed right after an attack. A lot of the bills have been around for a while, and they sit around collecting dust because no one wants to fix something when it’s not a problem. Here are Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn’s own words:

I have always campaigned against neo-colonial wars that are fought for resources on the pretence of fighting for human rights. We need an understanding of our past and our role in the making of the conflicts today, whether it be the Sykes-Picot Agreement or our interventions in the Middle East post 9/11.

I argue for a different type of foreign policy based on political and not military solutions; on genuine internationalism that recognises that all human life is precious, no matter what nationality; and solidarity with the oppressed across the globe from the subjugated Palestinians to the displaced Chagos Islanders.

That sounds dire only if you’re in the weapons business. The west has been bombing various parts of the ME for more than a decade now. If bombing worked then we wouldn’t see tens of thousands fleeing the ME for Europe.

The region is awash with weapons and fractured along dozens, maybe hundreds of lines. Taking out one group will only enable others to expand if the action isn’t a part of a coherent strategy to advance peace and stability in the region.

I like how the gun discussion turned to mental health when it wasn’t brought up before. Trying to conflate mental health issues with gun issues is an attempt to derail a legitimate conversation. Perfectly sane people pull out a gun and shoot someone because they got angry.

Guns are designed to kill. The fact that they are means they need to be addressed, in addition to addressing mental health issues.

I have been assaulted in downtown LA twice over the years. . Nobody was armed, I never got seriously hurt but in both instances the guys that assaulted me were in need of treatment. One I’ll never really know as he was not caught. the other poor guy had been dosed with a PCP cigarette. That guy hurt a couple cops trying to arrest him for the assault and went to jail. Poor guy, small in stature and street homeless aged beyond his years. Could have got himself shot by LAPD had they displayed less patience.

So there ya go a real intersection of urban life, successful gun control, insane people on the street untreated, what a difference individual police decisions in use of force make. Propagandists try to play this modern life fractal equation as either or. Screw ‘em.

There’s one other point regarding mental health matters of all kinds, and that is that while the legislature and the executive propose, it is bureaucratic agencies under the executive that dispose. And they sometimes try to avoid dealing with those who have more severe mental illnesses in favor of those who can be more readily helped. This is both to try to positively impact a larger number of people (which is an honorable motive) and to make sure their official statistics look good (which is a less-than-honorable motive).

Looks like the El Nino coming up here is gonna be a whopper.

The developing El Nino is stronger than the last major event of its type in 1997.

According to the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the UK Met Office, this El Nino is shaping up to be the strongest since records began in 1950.

El Nino is a natural phenomenon which occurs every two to seven years and lasts between six and 18 months.

In North America, where much of the south and west has been experiencing the worst drought in a century, the El Nino could bring the benefit of rain, although if the El Nino of 1997-98 is anything to go by, that rain could result in severe flooding and deaths.

Even Europe is not immune from the effects of an El Nino. If this year’s event follows the pattern of previous ones, then winter weather here could be colder and drier than average and last well into spring.

So I was thinking about how RWNJs complain about intolerant supposedly “tolerant” Liberals are about things.

Which led me to the question: What exactly does tolerance mean in this context?

Pondering that further, I came up with this: Tolerance means that I believe you have the right to believe and do whatever you want so long as such activity is legal, but it doesn’t mean I don’t get to call you an asshole when you do or say stupid stuff.

Is that the basic idea?

Let’s just call the guy a socialist and be done with him. It’s the patriotic freedom liberty thing to do. Being objective and thinking about things is for freedom hating commies.

He’s so ill mannered that he actually said that the £80 billion that Britain would spend on Trident would be better spent elsewhere. Trident is, for a military the size of the UK’s, like having chrome plated tracks on their tanks.

Yep and it causes societal fear. Lanza and Rodger are a big part of why I don’t disclose my Asperger’s to prospective employers and dates. Most people are tolerant mind you but I take no chances.

I’m tolerant to a point. I can tolerate their wacko beliefs when it’s just that but when it’s what Davis wants which is to actually discriminate then all bets are off.

Makes sense. There’s a difference between believing what you want and actively forcing those beliefs on others.

And the ironies of ironies: The CATO institute (aka The Koch paid shills) has constantly bemoaned about these subsidies, and yet their Golden Boy Scott Walker went ahead and gave the Milwaukee Bucks owner a cool $250 million in Tax Breaks by stealing that same amount from the University of Wisconsin System.

At least one person in CATO took notice, but used Jon Oliver as his shield.

SO in the end, nothing to see here, move along.

re: #323 Belafon

1. Calling oneself a Christian is not analogous to calling oneself a Democrat. For one thing, there is one Dem party with an official platform, but many Christian churches. There are further problems that make the comparison unreasonable.

2. Fugelsang’s definition is OK in the sense in which Jack Chick’s definition, that excludes Catholics, is OK.
Nobody prohibits private, sectarian definitions. But they’re useless in a non-sectarian context.

Any def that says that a Christian is only someone who is “doing the things that Jesus said people should do”, rather than using general descriptive statements like “believes there is God and Jesus is his resurrected Son” (or something akin to that) will be overly subjective, standing on a shaky ground, imposing the definitions of vague terms like “kindness” and “judging” on other people - and those will likely be modern definitions too.
The objections to such interpretations are not hard to predict: kindness is showing the gays the error of their ways, “judging” means something else and you know it too, or you wouldn’t be judging Davis, and so on. Moreover, you will be “proven” with thorough Biblical citations that Christianity is first of all about accepting Jesus as savior (or some other competing interpretation), and even if a Christian acts not in accordance with Jesus’ teachings, that makes them a bad Christian, not a non-Christian.

There are tens of thousands of volumes variously interpreting almost each word of the Bible, and you want to impose one “naive” (in a non-pejorative sense) interpretation on all Christians? Not gonna work. And any definition that excludes hundreds of millions of modern Christians, as well as 99% of the historical ones, is plainly useless.

One further problem is that for untold millions of Christians (formally - for all Catholics and the Orthodox) the Bible is not the only sacred book; the writings of the Church Fathers, interpreting the Bible and specifically Jesus’ words (sort of the Christian analog to the Talmud), and the statements of the Councils are almost as authoritative as the Bible. “Sola Scriptura” is a Protestant concept. While Davis is a Protestant, this still precludes any naive definition based on conduct, because you can’t take your own understanding of the Biblical teachings and apply it directly, without running it through the filter of the Tradition in case of these branches of Christianity.

Finally, this is not so much an argument as a word of caution: we want believers to be liberal; therefore we don’t want them to follow their sacred books strictly, because these books contain lots of outdated, often plain scary stuff. We want the believers to reinterpret these places in accordance with the modern norms. Conduct-based definitions based on naive readings of sacred texts are *not* conductive towards this goal.

I’m not going to be popular for this, but I’m getting to the point where I no longer give two shits. Or even one.

My deepest wish for you, or for anyone who tosses around the “tarded”, be it lib, re, or conserva, is that you NEVER have to watch your own child fight and struggle to learn the simplest things. Not because he’s stupid, but because his brain is wired differently than most. I hope you never ever have to watch other kids drive by yours while he’s waiting for the bus and hear them scream “FUCKING RETARD!!! FAGGOT!” at him. Or to have kids throw bottles of tobacco spit at him that break all over his clothes so he has to come back into the house, heartbroken, to shower and change. I hope you never have to watch your child gather up all his courage not to cry, because boys don’t cry, when he’s told he doesn’t belong somewhere because he’s “retarded”. I seriously pray you never ever have to feel that, because I swear, I would rather be beat with a fucking hose than feel that. And if I feel that, the depth to which he feels it is something so heart shattering I have a hard time wrapping my head around it. It’s not ok. It’s just not.

I am normally not the word police, because I curse like a fucking sailor and I’m not always the sweetest little petunia in the garden. But this word, and the variations of it in this context sucks. I’ll shut up now.

So Kim davis is getting ready to keep not doing the thing the judge told her to not not do. My guess it’s that her argument will be that since her deputies represent her, Havingt hem sign is the same as her signing the license.

Rand Paul haz a bad case of the sads because he isn’t the flakest candidate running.

Rick Perry finds that a new set of glasses doesn’t make him any more likable and says “screw you guys, I’m going home”

Does that pretty much sum up the news?

i officially no longer understand what’s going on

A Monmouth University poll released Thursday found that in head-to-head matchups with nine top members of the GOP field, the real-estate mogul beat each of his rivals—except for Mr. Carson. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who for months was the field’s front-runner, lost with 37% to Mr. Trump’s 56%. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio’s margin was similarly poor: 38% to 52%. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker lost 38% to 53%; Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul 27% to 60%; Ohio Gov. John Kasich 29% to 62%; and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie 30% to 63%. Former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Carly Fiorina and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz came the closest, losing 37% to 50% and 41% to 48%, respectively.

In a matchup with Mr. Carson, Mr. Trump didn’t even come close. He lost with 36% of GOP voters’ support, compared with 55% for Mr. Carson. Neither candidate has ever held elected office.

I don’t recall ever downdinging a comment here, (I may have, I just don’t think so) not even this one. I don’t think Dark Falcon is mean, but I hope he thinks about it before using it again. That’s really all I could hope for, is some thinking to happen. Hell I’ve used the word, in the past, but it’s not part of my vocabulary anymore. Too much sadness and hurt is evoked from it. There’s a huge difference between stupidity and disability, and yes, retard has other meanings, like stopping the growth of or inhibiting something, but lets be real about this particular context; it’s calling someone or a group of people stupid and belittling them. It’s meant to hurt and demean, it’s not conducive to any kind of meaningful conversation to figure out fixing things that are broken.

My two cents and a quarter anyhow….

re: #407 A Mom Anon

Updinged in memory of my cousin, who had cerebral palsy and was partially deaf, and as a result was very difficult to understand in speech, painfully awkward in movement. They told my aunt when he was three that he should be put into a home for life because he was hopelessly retarded (this was 1958, when they had homes). She didn’t — she’d seen him come home from a trip to the grocery store and spell out words he had seen on packages using his alphabet blocks. At three.
He grew up being called a retard, being called dummy, being called stupid. Had an eidetic memory, wound up memorizing the Interstate road system as they built it out in the 60’s and 70’s; he worked with AAA proofing maps. Functional brain trapped in an inadequate body, and denigrated most of his life.

Every once in a while I just get annoyed enough that I can’t help throwing a verbal elbow.

Too busy with your perverse man-child gun obsession to acknowledge the fact that we have a big fucking problem: far higher gun homicide rates than any other developed nation, all of which have stricter gun safety laws. Does that even matter to you?

I know you probably don’t actually fellate your guns, but it sure sounds like you have a close, intimate, and loving attachment to them. And thus empathy towards human firearm victims becomes secondary to love of an inanimate object. Like I said, it’s perverse.
