Well it was sexual at some point because Jesus had other siblings, but the principal difference between now and then is:
1. Women didn’t have careers, they bore the children and looked after the home while the men worked.
2. Life spans were a LOT shorter and medicine was much less advanced. Marrying women off young guaranteed fertility and the continuance of the human race. In addition, if an average person had 6 children they’d be doing good if 3 of them saw adulthood. There was no choice but to procreate at a high rate given the realities of the time and the MUCH higher childhood mortality rate.
