To be fair, any black person who runs for President in this country is obliged to play a certain amount of country music as a way to sooth skittish white voters. Call it Redneck Whispering. “There, there. It’s all right, redneck. I’m not going to hurt you.”

I’m not concerned with the country music. It’s the song choice. That’s not a patriotic song. It’s a song about a family that’s so torn apart by alcoholism and abuse that the mother’s only way out is to kill herself and her abusive husband by setting the house on fire.

It’s like people thinking that “Born in the USA” is a rah-rah jingoistic anthem.
