re: #331 ninja cat

O/T for this twitter newbie. I just signed up (@exninjacat) and am so far following 29 people. I left my computer up today and came home to find ‘857 new tweets’! Is that normal? Do I have something set up wrong? Also, I am following a couple people here that I have seen on there, if you see me doing something dumb please fill me in. I’m trying to figure this out but am just a little overwhelmed.

I’ll second what klys said, depends on who you’re following. I’ve unfollowed people who tweet too much (some do it literally every few minutes for hours on end).

An important thing to do is go though your account settings. If you’re accessing Twitter via the web, use the gear icon in the upper right. Once you’re there, the main things to check on are 1.) Security and privacy, 2.) Email notifications, and 3.) Apps. I check #1 and #3 every few months, just to see if anything has changed or if anything suspicious shows up.

Also, have a strong password and use Tweetdeck for your desktop machine (if possible). I use Tweetbot for my iOS devices. What else? Oh, I use totally separate email accounts for different things—some belong to me (or rather my domains, where I can add/edit/delete accounts), and others are GMail or Yahoo accounts (mostly GMail). All of that is totally separate from personal, real life stuff.

I know that may sound kinda cloak & dagger paranoid, but at least if one of my accounts is hacked, then it’s only that account that’s compromised and the others are safe (because they use different emails, passwords, etc.) Obfuscation is the first line of defense/threat mitigation.
