Sure, you can make exceptions for ‘working dogs’ and even stretch it a little. But most people ‘just’ have pets for pleasure and companionship.

I’m not saying people are big terrible assholes for owning pets. I own two cats. I’m saying that it’s something to think about and consider, and a lot of people who label themselves as environmentalists do only very cursory examinations of their actual resource usage, and pet ownership is one of the larger things that tends to get left out.
