In my experience it never went away. In particular, among the moneyed and landed conservative types (who I was frequently around by virtue of my family’s standing) it was always present. Country-club racism. All the code terms—New York, internationalist, et cetera—I heard them all first explicitly framed in terms of Jewish-ness.
One of my favorite fictive “uncles” was an non-practicing Jew, and there was a deep ugly surprise when it became an issue of controversy when his step-daughter married into a “nice” Christian family (that were awful snobbish wingnuts, it turned out…complete with hidden fiscal irresponsibility, haha)…not even a matter of conversion or culture, just that he was one. And that was before I was a teenager, and it was a real eye-opener.
