The scientific press does blow things way out of proportion, witness a new “missing link”; always a fossil of a previously known species that lived millions of years ago that does not add to our knowledge. As a corollary,a scientist who finds a fossil and says it links dinosaurs to birds. In both cases they are trying to hype a pedestrian story into something more.

They have a word for that in other fields: publicity.
