For much of the past century, up until very recent decades, the governments of Mexico and central America were no friend to their citizens. Having to pay a bribe to every government functionary you deal with must drain a lot of respect for the law out of a person, in addition to the depredations of the police states. I don’t see the illegals turning into Jeffersonian small-d democrats upon breathing the magic air of America—especially when their first act is to cock a snoot at the legal means of coming here.

I know an awful lot of ‘illegals’ who have done just that, though. Good, solid people who have done everything they can to be good Americans, and, where possible, legalize their status. They appreciate the rule of law, having lived without it.

A hundred years ago, they said the same thing you write above about the Sicilians and the Poles and the Irish. Look what happened there!
