There’s also such a wide gray area when it comes to racism. It doesn’t just matter if you’re racist, hold racist views, but what you do about it. Plenty of white abolitionists were still racist, often in a paternalistic way. Is that something criticize-able? Sure. Does that take anything away from their abolitionism? No. Does it really say anything about modern attitudes on race, liberalism, etc? Of course not.
