Carson was born and raised in Detroit, he went to Yale for undergrad and Michigan for medical school. Then he worked at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, and now lives in a Baltimore suburb. Given that personal history, I could totally see Carson not believing that people considered race “before Obama.” It’s completely ahistorical and almost as crazy as believing the earth (and possibly universe) is only 6,000 years old - but it’s entirely possible he didn’t experience much discrimination in his life so he doesn’t believe it’s real.

I assume though that he would have had older relatives that came to Detroit during the Great Migration from the South that would have though.
