I think this is where the “He knew what he was getting into” comment came from.

Kelly, who understands the point of self-sacrifice and reveres it as an American value would say, “He was killed doing what he loved. He knew this was what he was signing up for”, and in saying it he’d know and convey that he meant it to honor the sacrifice.

Trump, OTOH, does not consider sacrifice to be a value worth respecting. So he’d say it in such a way that it would convey, “You knew the job was dangerous when you took it.”
