I keep hearing chatter in wingnut-infested fora about the latter. And we could do DDR comparisons, Soviet comparisons, Franco comparisons and Mussolini comparisons, because the same things happened there…

Problem with such comparisons is that they just send the discussion down a rat hole. And I do not like “New Cold War” as a term either: Russia is not the USSR, it is not exporting a global ideology.

But I do see Putin’s long-term goal in establishing the former Russian Empire, including all the former Soviet Republics and then exerting a greater deal of political and economic influence on previous Soviet satellite states.
