Uninformed voters can play a large role in midterm elections. That’s why the Late Show has enlisted the services of an uninformed correspondent, Robin ‘Bootsie’ Plunkett, to cover a campaign fundraiser for a congressional candidate.

I saw in the last thread a tweet by Ben Shapiro where he was concerned about who his daughter could come across in a restroom.

I don’t think Ben has recovered from this messy appearance and it still carries over to today.

Was reading the Wiki page on Tommy Robinson because I didn’t know his current status as far as being free or in jail.

Wiki - Tommy Robinson (activist)

Anyway…saw this bit: In July 2018, it was reported United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback lobbied the UK government on the treatment of Robinson.

So, Trump has an “ambassador” in place to do things like help Tommy Robinson out of some of his legal problems in the U.K. That is some mighty fine ‘religious’ work. WTF???

I also checked the link from that to this: Wiki - United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom

It is a small world inside the Republican party. They are into recycling.

On July 26, 2017, the White House announced the nomination of Sam Brownback, then-Governor of Kansas to fill the vacancy in the office.[7] Five months later, the Senate had yet to hold a confirmation vote, so per Senate rules, he was required to be nominated again in 2018 in order for a vote to be held.[8] He was confirmed to the position on January 24, 2018, on a 49-49 vote of the Senate, with Vice President Mike Pence breaking the tie in favor of Brownback.[9]

Well, if by “these people” you mean Donald Trump, the answer is likely “no”, since he is just so self-absorbed and bone-stupid about most things, he’s probably oblivious….

But if one takes it to mean “many/most people in the Administration”, the answer is probably “Yes- and they agree with most of it”: especially the bitter, reflexive Muslim-bashing.

Regarding the 12 Mueller indictments, pause to think about what our intelligence agencies accomplished. They documented every keystroke punched out by 12 Russian intelligence officers over more than six months. We will learn in due time about the GRU’s links to US persons.

They would not have bothered with those indictments unless that was a first step to linking them to members of the Trump campaign or organization.

He doesn’t give a shit because the Russian meddling gave him the office.

It’s deeper than that. Donny’s ego is vast but it’s also paper thin, so easily bruised that he has to constant massage it. So even if he did not collude with Vlad, he has a vested interest in denying any form of Russian influence on the votes because it calls his election into question. It’s the same reason he continues to push the idea of “massive voter fraud” and insists on bringing up the electoral map and inauguration pictures whenever possible.

I’m sure tRump thinks the Russians put him in the White House because they love him so much, but maybe some in his administration aren’t as gullible, and know they did it to sow chaos.

Maybe they’re afraid that the Russians feel the best way to sow chaos would be to help the Democrats this November.

They’ll offer the States help against cyberattacks so that if that happens, it’s on the record that Russia interferes in our elections to help Democrats. The Schweinerei in 2016 never happened—or, it helped Democrats, but the MAGAts turned out in force and repelled the attack!

Well, you still have usefulness as an “Aye” or “Nay” sounding board, thinking up what to use etc.
Or ask relevant questions, like why Nazi graphics/layout with Trump message and Trump layout/graphics with Nazi message? That is to drive across the point that they’re barely distinguishable from each other…
Even if you have little to bring to the task at hand, it is appreciated, that you do is the point, at least in my opinion.

This is a generalization, but how come Democrats of color have always seen the threat from Russia so damned clearly - while others (shall we say) have not? And despite our national history of racism? This fact (and it is one) always amazes me.

Modern Russia is no longer the USSR and the attitude of the GOP has changed radically on it.

They have come to see it as a model for the US: authoritarian, oligarchic and theocratic.

A lost piece of cinema history is about to be rediscovered by Dark Horse Comics. Ahead of next week’s San Diego Comic-Con, the publisher has announced that it will be releasing a miniseries adapting the unproduced original screenplay for Alien 3 by acclaimed science-fiction author William Gibson.

The screenplay, which Gibson wrote in 1987 based on existing treatments, was eventually replaced amid the extensive development process for the movie, and tells a story entirely different from the eventual movie released in 1992; for one thing, Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley was sidelined almost completely, with two of the characters from James Cameron’s Aliens shouldering the brunt of the story: Bishop (Lance Henriksen) and Hicks (Michael Biehn).

Little thread with some engaging replies.

The reasons are varied, but most of them boil down to lingering hatred of the Clintons. Whether it was the BS of the “Great Penis Hunt,” grudges held over from ‘08, or just a belief that Hillary had kept “good” candidates from running, there was a lot of simmering animosity towards her. So when she lost to Trump, it felt like a vindication that she was a “terrible candidate” and the loss had proven such. It’s why they brushed off talk about Russia and why many dipshits (ex: Greenwald, Glenn) still insist that Donny won because “economy anxiety.”

And back before he ran for those same votes, Bernie liked to speak about the plight of the workin’ man in the South and how the Dems needed to get out there and earn their votes.

You just have to read between the lines: Bernie didn’t want those votes because they were majority black and he trusted in the majority white North to carry him to victory.

I’m Dutch. Does that give me a bit more of a right to speak, in your eyes? I’m not much of a fan myself but I can tell you that more refs, elimination of offside rule and at least more substitutions, even if not unlimited, aren’t exactly novel suggestions.

Okay, there’s actually already more than one ref, at least sort of, plus some assistance, but they’ve been dragging their feet on pretty much anything that would help facilitate more accurate adjudication for ages. I suspect the leagues/teams/sponsors suspect that hordes of fans getting outraged at some (quite often rather indefensible) call by that “one ref” is actually keeping people engaged more than it turns them off.

Anyway, half that article isn’t really as far out there as you think, from my perspective.

Bird on a wire:

Sitting on the front porch watching the sun slowly heading down. A blue jay lands on the wire running from the road to the house. The bird sits silhouetted against the simi-red sky and looking regal. A real nice picture of nature. Then the bird drops a poop and flies off.

They’d only care if it’s a white person who get’s killed for it.

Kinda like up in Chaska MN where they killed a suicidal white 16 yo boy the other day. They let him successfully suicide by cop and you know that since he’s white, they’ll pay for it.

Nope. I’m interested to know whom to call, however. Police are right out, but it doesn’t seem to fit the purview of EMT’s (plus they might notify the police), and it’s not like I have any mental health professionals on speed dial.

EMT’s are a better choice. But if you have knowledge that someone (eg my son) has issues, work out an emergency plan with Human Services and their psychologist/psychiatrist for what to do in a mental break.

This may be one of the big downfalls of the 911 system - you don’t call the cops, or the EMTs. You call 911 and the dispatcher calls them.

Hey, we all got to do what we got to do. Either way it hurts. I just can’t hang with people who support obviously evil fucking things. Ever considered ghosting them? re: #294 wheat-dogg

JFC….. I wish pestilence and disease on this fuckers. Boils on his nutsack.

Carson announced in April a new plan that would lead to large increases in rents paid by most low-income Americans. According to The Post, this would cause the rents of the poorest Americans to at least triple.

If Congress approves Carson’s plan, then the monthly minimum rent charged by public-housing facilities would increase from $50 to $150. It would also increase rents paid by subsidized housing tenants from 30 percent of adjusted income to 35 percent of gross income, a much larger number.

Carson has previously defended his plan to raise rents saying that increasing minimum rents from $50 to $150 will give people “more skin in the game.” He has also denied that (as critics have charged) his proposal will lead to “a war on the poor.” Instead, he has said that his agency is really declaring “a war on poor management.”

I’m sure that’s what he would think if someone tripled his living expenses.

From the FEMA press release:

NEWS REPORTS
FEMA did not provide adequate meals.

FULL STORY
The Puerto Rico feeding mission was the largest and longest in the agency’s history. The agency worked extensively with private sector entities, non-governmental organizations, and other Federal agencies to provide a full range of meal options, from ready-to-eat to hot meals.

From the real world (bolding mine):

Early in the crisis, FEMA awarded a large contract to a businesswoman from Atlanta to supply millions of meals, but only a fraction were delivered…Brown scored a $156 million FEMA a contract to provide 30 million meals at a cost of $5.10 each. She subcontracted the job to two companies including a caterer in Atlanta, with 11 employees...Only 50,000 of the 30 million meals were delivered. FEMA terminated the contract “due to late delivery.” FEMA says Brown’s company was vetted. But she has had five previous government contracts terminated for “not delivering required food” and her “inability to ship products” — and no experience in dealing with large-scale disasters.

Whenever anybody says soccer is boring (Of course it’s boring, it’s sports!), I always tell them that whenever anybody scores a goal, they should increment the score by six, like American football (better called “armpitball”). This creates an illusion that there’s more going on than there really is.

you sum it up nicely. I will go watch the finals today because my grandma was Croatian and I feel ethnically compelled to support them as well as to support a nation of 4 million against one of 67 million.

I have been in Europe for over 30 years and have totally failed to gain any great appreciation for the game of soccer. Even worse is in league play, where teams play for points in a standings table, I have seen games where each team has scored a goal, allowing them to advance, and then just stand on the ball for the rest of the game, not wanting to take any chances of losing.

I have enough faith in Senator Warner that he was telling the truth that it’s gonna be a real bumpy ride for the next couple months and we’re going to see Republicans run into the Russian embassy for asylum.

The first one will be Roger Stone.

Checking in from Fort St. John, British Columbia.

Incidences of Canadian Nice (tm) today:

Nearly every person we met was interested in the trip we’re taking. (The car does do a bit for a conversation starter.)

Not so nice:

Some dipwad in Alberta in a pickup truck decided to “roll coal” on us (I didn’t know that was a thing here). That’s the third time that’s happened to us (the others were in Denver and Cheyenne).

When we checked into the motel, someone in the lobby commented we were driving an “inappropriate car for the area” due to the wildlife (deer and moose). I pointed out we’ve already bagged two deer with our car. He said, “well, they weren’t Canadian deer.” As for a moose, I really don’t think it would matter what kind of vehicle short of a tank you hit a moose with, your vehicle will be totaled. All that matters at that point is if you survive it. We’ve already survived one cattle stampede on a state highway in Nebraska (I imagine a steer would be just as damaging as a moose).

I suspect a bunch of people have driven Sixties VW Beetles up the Alaska Highway and survived, so I imagine we’ll survive in a Smart.

I also pointed out as to the appropriateness of our car: $1.33/litre for gasoline.

326
Anymouse 🌹  Jul 14, 2018 • 10:59:55pm

One disappointment: When we got to Dawson Creek, we did the touristy thing and got out for photos at the Zero Milepost of the Alaska Highway. Unfortunately, that was the time the camera decided to go on the fritz.

Something happened to its memory and all it would do is take photos whitewashed so badly you could not see anything in them. (I yearn for the days of film cameras.)

I was able to fix that when I got it hooked to my computer, but that moment is now lost in time… .

As for all the stunning scenery on Alberta Hwy 43, my wife said she’d rather not take photos anyway: She wanted to drink it all in and keep the memories rather than photos (we’ve done that before on trips).

America would go to war before it would pay that much for gasoline. (We pay more than that in Europe, last time I filled up it was around $1.70)

Of course we would throw fits over having to pay for it per liter.

And I still cannot get my head around the way Euros measure mileage: liters per 100 km…

NHL hockey used to have a similar problem. You got 2 points for a win, 1 for a Tie and 0 for a loss but the 0 for a loss applied even if you lost in overtime. So teams would just basically skate around and do nothing in the OT because they wanted to make sure they got the point.

This was alleviated by awarding teams a point for
making OT and then awarding an extra point to whichever team won in OT.

I am hesitant with Third Reich comparisons, but I do not like his development at all.

Nor do I like him pardoning the Bundy Ranchers. That is a signal to anyone prepared to take up arms against the US government that they will be able to get away with it.

I keep hearing chatter in wingnut-infested fora about the latter. And we could do DDR comparisons, Soviet comparisons, Franco comparisons and Mussolini comparisons, because the same things happened there…

Problem with such comparisons is that they just send the discussion down a rat hole. And I do not like “New Cold War” as a term either: Russia is not the USSR, it is not exporting a global ideology.

But I do see Putin’s long-term goal in establishing the former Russian Empire, including all the former Soviet Republics and then exerting a greater deal of political and economic influence on previous Soviet satellite states.

Neither can a lot of us, TBH. One in xx (so a litre per xx km) is the colloquial unit of mileage around here (NL). IMO L/100km is a better indication (since you get a better feel how going from 1/18 to 1/23 isn’t nearly as impressive as going 1/8 to 1/13 for example) but it’s not really catching on with, well, anyone in my experience.

If you know how many liters your tank holds, you’ll know far you can go on one tankful. Divide tank capacity by liter/100km figure, multiply by 100 km. [35/5 = 7 x 100 = 700]

If a Smart car uses 5 liters/100km, and it has a 35 liter tank, it can go about 700 km on one tankful. (700 km = 437 miles)

Yeah I suspect temperature is going to be the one sticking point for most of us. The offset zero makes it almost impossible to get an intuitive feeling for whichever of the two systems you didn’t grow up with. I’m okay with most imperial/American/whatever measures (bunch of tabletop gaming will do that to you if nothing else) but F? That’s never ever going to work for me, intuitively.

I’ve lived in China for 10 years, and I still have only a vague grasp of Celsius temps. I know 20°C = 68°F from science, and C degrees are 1.8 x F degrees, so 30°C is 68+18 (86°F) and 40°C is too hot don’t go outside if you can help it. (68+36=104°F). So I work from those benchmarks.

Parsecs measure distance, so you’d have to work in the speed of light somehow as the universal ratio of distance/time.

0º on the Fahrenheit scale was the coldest temperature humans could produce on demand before refrigeration equipment (or waiting for the weather to do it), by mixing water, ice, and salt. 100º was supposed to be the normal temperature of the human body, gotten from averaging hospital records, so it kind of makes sense.

What Daniel Fahrenheit forgot was that most people who are having their temperature taken in a hospital are sick, so that skewed the average somewhat….

The zinc boiled so hard certain parts inside were ruined. He switched to pressure on the brass, vacuum in the casting chamber problem solved.

Not entirely: his 100° was his estimate of body temperature and 0° is the temperature at which a saturated salt solution freezes. So not entirely random, like an inch being the size of three barleycorns, but yeah, it is just what I grew up with and how I still think…balmy upper 70’s…chilly 40’s, etc…

Cubits = the length of the king’s forearm. Foot = the length of his foot.

True, Fahrenheit did base his scale on measurable numbers, but they were far from obvious ones.

A common science demo is to boil water at room temp inside a vacuum jar. It just bubbles away, look just like boiling water. Take it out, and the temp is still room temp.

Tara Westover first heard of the Holocaust in college. She spent her childhood on an Idaho farm, being home-schooled by racist survivalist parents until she escaped her abusive family, got a doctorate at Cambridge, and learned that Jews are not the devil.

Look to this becoming more of the norm than the exception.

They already have us question basic reality and asking us to “respect” their points of view.

Ouch. Out of curiosity though, why is that routine? just to lower the melting point? (can’t imagine that’s going to make much of a difference with most metals and it’d seem easier to just fill the chamber with something inert if oxidation is the issue)

Since brass and most precious metal alloys contain copper, we try to get rid of all the air to avoid oxides and o2 absorption. Sometimes with fire or carbon crucibles, sometimes by vacuum, sometimes via displacement of air with argon or nitrogen. When we made purple gold we emptied the chamber 5 times and refilled with expensive argon. Then turned on the heat.

If they are tied after five (that would be 0-0, 1-1, or 2-2 because of saves), they then go to one kick each. If Team A goes first and scores, and Team B doesn’t, Team A wins. If Team A goes first and misses, and Team B scores, Team B wins. If both teams fail to score, they do it again.

There was a Hong Kong fellow the other day arrested at the Chinese border with 44 kg in gold bars hidden in his car’s armrest. I don’t think he gets to keep the gold.

I saw that. We had to take these classes for work, all about anti money laundering law requirements for our industry. The “real” size of the underground gold economy is jaw dropping. Some of that illicit gold gets drone missile struck in the Middle east when our guys can get the target the right convoy of ISIL. Some gets caught like in HK. But a lot moves around just fine thanks to certain countries and some very old money networks.

Also remember that guy that just grabbed a shipping bucket of scrap gold in NYC?

Chuck did not that and even blew him off saying he was sick of it.

Well we can legally but fees, tariffs etc have put the prospect of those sales so low as to have the good business vs hack or fraud risk out of balance essentially. I hope to fix that by region but I’m obviously less hopeful than ever. And WP Engine is probably less able to set specifics than custom written sites.

Shame.

The Kingdome was at least known as the “Doomed Stadium” from the get-go, so it was no surprise when it was blown up after…23? years. What was surprising was that we spent $50,000,000 to fix the crumbling roof tiles a couple of years before blowing it up.

Rome MUST have its’ gladiators.

I worked as a consultant to a sports director and studied what sports are *supposed* to be about: competition, striving for excellence, fair play,: all sorts of great ideals

but working for college sports, it was clear what sports were about: a minor league for the NFL/NBA, generally paid for by taxpayers through sports scholarships.

A professional league that represents a lot of the worst of American financial excesses and has little concern about ruining players’ health or careers if that is what it takes to win championships and enhance revenue from sponsoring/TV rights.

The only sport I actually follow out of interest is olympic hockey, because there is a lot less fighting than in the NFL.

I’ll watch the pirates on MLBtv but it never fails that they lose every game I tune in to see.

Outside of that I’ve never been interested in other sports. I still have an interest in chess, go and bridge.

My dad was really into bodybuilding. He went to the YMCA regularly until he was hurt in a mill accident. After that he just followed bodybuilding in magazines and TV contests.

Mom loved the Pirates and that’s probably why I still watch their games.

Grandma Bacon worked for the Navy Department under FDR (Wilson’s assistant Secretary of the Navy). She told me of the terror that struck with the 1918 epidemic. People were dropping dead all over the place, mortuaries were overflowing so other public buildings were converted into temporary morgues. She was required to wear a surgical mask all the time at work. The minute anyone had coughing spasms they were isolated. Grandma was so scared when she had to go into the isolation room with coffee and tea for them and several of the isolated coworkers were dead.

She thinks she survived because she had the flu the previous year and was bedridden for several weeks. When I got the flu during the 1984 epidemic I was in and out of the hospital several times. Grandma was worried sick and she wouldn’t leave my side. It retriggered all those nightmares she had.

Reminder that Bannon spent half a year in a position that gave him access to the highest level of classified intelligence and internal operations. You should be thinking about what he’s doing with that information now.

I wondered what he has been doing since the Roy Moore fiasco. Makes perfect sense that he is looking for new ways to bring about the collapse of Civilization As We Know It so he can start rebuilding it in his image.

He is making challenges that some people might take him up on and test to find out how tough.

And the next question: why are we apparently doing so little to prevent it now? Dan Coats, DNI, just stated that we face the kinds of challenges in the cyber world that we faced just before 9/11. Will we start to see attacks on power grid? Wall Street operations? Our military’s computational abilities? Hopefully things are being done out of the headlines.

I think it was all about the timing. By the time they heard about hacking and started to understand it occurred and how, it was late in the game and Obama and the FBI hesitated for political reasons.

They knew how it would look if they came out and said it looked like the Russians were throwing the race to Trump. Really think about the dynamics of the media, Trump and Clinton and how would a revelation like that be played?

So they waited to more or less let the election happen. But at that point they didn’t really know the depth and influence it has.

So it was a wrong call because they probably had no real clue of how far it really went what with all the fake ads, Facebook, backdoor contributions…all coordinated.

So, Trump and the Russians were effective because they went unnoticed for so long and when noticed it was already well underway and working. And no one but they knew it until later. Like just after the election when they could confirm what had happened.

That’s my take. It would have been hard to actually stop it.

Yeah, I remember him claiming during the campaign that the Republicans didn’t get hacked because they had much better security. Here’s the quote:

“Despite how they spent hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars more money than we did, the Democratic National Committee was hacked successfully, very successfully, and terribly successfully,” he said. “And the Republican National Committee was not hacked. From there:

From the 1980s onward, the rotary dial was gradually supplanted by dual-tone multi-frequency push-button dialing, first introduced to the public at the 1962 World’s Fair under the trade name “Touch-Tone”. Touch-tone technology primarily used a keypad in form of a rectangular array of push-buttons for dialing.

I actually saw that touch-tone phone at the World’s Fair. It was 16 years before I saw another one.
