I just heard part of an interview Anderson Cooper did with the PR person for the races - the guy said there was a Mayday call prior to the crash; and the pilot pulled out of the race (he somehow pulled out of and away from the circle they were using for this event).

So he knew something was wrong with the bird just he lost total control. And he had enough control to begin pulling away.
