I am genuinely curious. I can see the political motivation behind a lot of maneuvers like this…but this one in particular perplexes me.

I don’t know. It probably had something to do with the way his settlement with Bain was negotiated. Remember this was finalized in 2002, long before he ran for president, I don’t see any evidence that this was some clever plot to hide something for a future presidential run. Probably much more about the way his agreement with Bain was negotiated. There’s also no evidence about how much he knew or cared what was going on at Bain after he left in ‘99. Magement was turned over to a team and there’s no evidence he interfered with anything at Bain past ‘99.
