We can easily afford the disenfranchisement of the violent felons without upsetting our checks and balances. same as we can afford to not let them use that other individual right they had. Buying a gun. We are allowed as a society to leave them relatively defenseless to protect ourselves.

But if our system is rife with racism and disproportionately convicts blacks of felonies, including violent felonies, what you actually have is a system for disenfranchising one race disproportionately.

Indeed, the other side of this is often the argument the Right uses: “Felons are more likely to vote Democratic, so of course Democrats want felons to vote!” But really, it’s not that FELONS are more aligned with the Left, it’s that felons are disproportionately black, and blacks are disproportionately Democrats.

Flip it over, and you see the same kind of logic Kasich uses to support the disenfranchisement of DC residents - if we let them elect a voting representative, we’d just be adding another Democrat. Nothing about principle, just winning.
