At the point in the video of the cop being shot while lying down on the sidewalk, when they were going back to the car, one of the men had dropped something and bent down to pick it up. Maybe it fell out at that point and he didn’t notice it.

I’m still wondering what the deal was with what looked like a pair of shoes on the pavement right next to the open passenger side door of their car.
