Gulf Spill Update:

Preliminary reports have the Top Kill mud injection showing progress.

BP has achieved a dynamic seal, preventing oil and gas from leaking. There is still pressure from the well, indicating that the well is still not stabilised. The tricky part now is to reach the point where mud starts being lost into the formation (reservoir), and then slowly back off in mud weight until the hydrostatic pressure of the mud column is holding back pressure with out losing mud into the formation.

Obviously this is tricky because of the leaks, no way to determine how much mud is going down-well and how much is leaking out the top. Back off too much, and it will blow the mud out and we start again.

Once they believe they have the well balanced and under control, which could occur today, or take a couple of days more, they will inject cement to seal the well and hold the mud column in place.

Sounds great. Did you see the article from the LA Times I posted a couple of days ago about the command center at BP Houston? Apparently the best and the brightest from Govt., Oil Co.’s, education etc. are there. If this does succeed, they will get another big write up I’m sure.

Also there’s a link that sources say the head of the MMS has been fired.
