Exactly. An “elite abyss” would, obviously, be one really fine abyss. A superlative abyss. An abyss to end all abysses.

Of course it should. I think part of the problem here is the “abyss” in understanding the use of the word elite in reference to the government. It is not a complement, elites are not viewed as particularly bright, merely as professional politicians who have long since ceased to actually represent their constituents. Many of the political elite are demonstrably stupid regardless of your political perspective.

Perhaps instead of referring to the political class as elites we should call them effetes.
