Fujiya Market was a renowned Japanese market on the corner of Virgil and Clinton. The store opened in 1932 at a time when the neighborhood had a large Japanese-American population. In fact, Virgil Village was once called J-Flats. The market was known for amazing sashimi and a variety of Japanese goods. When the neighborhood became predominantly Latinx, they began carrying products like tortillas as well. Five years ago Fujiya closed its doors after 80 years in business. Where the market once stood, there’s a grocery store and carnicería called Osi Foodmart which caters to the Latinx population.
