I’ve been following the case for a while. They are being heartless.

The man and woman in question adopted her when she was a small child. What they didn’t know was adoption does not make a child an American citizen (much like marriage doesn’t). Under the law, the parents have to apply for citizenship for their child.

The daughter also didn’t know diddly about this as she grew up.

What they are trying to do now is claim she is an “illegal immigrant” and deport her to South Korea, to a nation where she has no family that she can identify, doesn’t know the culture, and doesn’t speak the language.

I am not sure you are talking about the story that is linked. She was brought over at 15 by her aunt and uncle(who are now her adoptive parents). Her biological parents are still in South Korea and if she was there until she was 15 I am pretty sure she knows the language. Also adoption does impart citizenship as long as it occurs before the child is 16 and they did not complete the adoption until she was 17.

This is still a horrible story, but not the one you are telling.
