My point is that religious observance, or following as religious leader has nothing to with how you are supposed to live your life.

Religious instruction is meant to provide you with the tools to make moral decisions that affect your life- no more, no less. You are supposed to make those choices for yourself.

Religious leaders are not meant to speak for God- He can speak for Himself.

Well there is a lot to know from the commentaries. Interpretation and the need to get the contexts and the relevant laws that apply to any verse are frequently very valid concerns. Specifically, you really can’t discount the oral tradition and expect to get it correct.

However, your point about hubris is well taken and a constant theme of my own whenever I point out the hypocrisy of certain religious people on the right.
