I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my Mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a U.S. Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it.

Have we found the universe that existed before the Big Bang?

Penrose posits the end of each universe will involve a return to low entropy. This is because black holes suck in all the matter, energy, and information they encounter, which works to remove entropy from our universe. (Where that entropy might go is another question entirely.) The universe's continued expansion into eventual nothingness causes the black holes themselves to evaporate, which ultimately leaves the universe in a highly ordered state once again, ready to contract into another singularity and set off the next Big Bang.

As alternative theories go, it's not without its merits, but there's no evidence to support it...until now.

If they're so against abortion, why don't they pick up the tab for carrying, birthing, and growing a child which some mother wanted to abort? Shouldn't they be building clinics, nurseries, schools, and providing fired-4-maternity-leave moms with jobs instead of killing doctors? They're also supposed to be god fearing christians, where's the logic?!?

20 laZardo  Wed, Nov 24, 2010 1:41:48am

This is the single defining moment of motherfucking badassery in the entire Mexican Drug War.

Don Alejo welcomed them with bullets; the entire army of gunmen returned fire. Don Alejo seemed to multiply, he seemed to be everywhere. The minutes would have seemed endless to those who had seen him as easy prey. Various gunmen were killed on sight. The others, in rage and frustration, intensified the attack by swapping out their assault rifles for grenades.

When everything finally fell silent, the air was left heavy with gunpowder. The holes left in the walls and the windows attested to the violence of the attack. When they went in search of what they had assumed was a large contingent, they were surprised to find only one man, Don Alejo.

The surviving gunmen did not take over the ranch. Thinking the military would arrive at any moment, they decided to run. They left behind what they thought were six corpses, but two of their gunmen had survived.

Shortly after, the Marines arrived and methodically reconstructed the events. A lone rancher, a man who worked a lifetime to be able to enjoy the fruits of his labor such as his ranch, had defended it to his death.

77 years old and going down like (a non-criminal version of) Tony Montana. Manly tears shall be shed.

21 AK-47%  Wed, Nov 24, 2010 2:32:26am

Don Alejo died for our sins. For our inability to curb or regulate demand for drugs, to curb or regulate the illegal weapons trade, and for our inablity to control and regulate border traffic and immigration.

re: #3 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

Have we found the universe that existed before the Big Bang?

That story got some press when Penrose broke it - probably because Penrose is a big enough name in physics for people to notice.

I'm not really convinced, though I've not read their actual paper, only the reports.

Problem is, even if the phenomenon is real (that is, there really is a few concentric circles of non-randomness in the CMB) it does not mean their proposal is the correct one to describe it.

Penrose is one of the better known neo-Platonist sympathizers. His and his colleagues hypothesis if true would establish that the big bang exploded into something. That something would be a previously existing space, perhaps just a pure Euclidean 3 dimensional space. That would solve the problem why our three spatial dimensions do indeed appear to be a flat 3 dimensional space. The problem arises because if "space" only started with the big bang then why, out of all the possible geometries, would there be a flat 3-space?

Yet this is, of course, just kicking the can down the road...

The restrictions, vigorously opposed by McDonald's, the California Restaurant Association and other representatives of the fast-food industry, are set to take effect in December 2011.

1st winter we were in atlanta (12 years ago) we had an "ice storm" (freezing rain for a couple of hours) The roads were dry within 2 hours after it stopped with ice still on lawns, in trees and roofs.
Trees did lose branches which fell on power lines causing scattered outages. We were without power for 5 days

The city virtually shut down for a week

Object lesson in why people should withhold judgement on any "terror" probe involving the use of government informants:

The Pathetic Newburgh Four
Should the FBI really be baiting sad-sack homegrown terrorists?
[Link: www.slate.com...]

These prosecutions fail the smell test, and lately the odor has washed over my own Bronx neighborhood of Riverdale. Last month, if you missed the news, four African-American ex-cons from Newburgh, N.Y., were convicted of plotting to bomb two synagogues here, one of them half a block from my house. The government released a photo of some of the men casing the joint that our local paper ran the day they were convicted.

One of the men in the photo is an FBI informant, Shahed Hussain. The case seems like a slam-dunk—until you learn more about him. Hussain, driving a flashy Mercedes and using the alias Maqsood, began to frequent the Masjid al-Ikhlas in down-at-the-heels Newburgh in 2008. Mosque leaders say he would meet congregants in the parking lot afterward, offering gifts and telling them they could make a lot of money—$25,000—if they helped him pursue jihad. The assistant imam said the suspicion Hussain was an informant was so great "it was almost like he had a neon sign on him." A congregant told a reporter that, in retrospect, everyone wished they'd called him out or turned him in. "Maybe the mistake we made was that we didn't report him," the man said. "But how are we going to report the government agent to the government?"

Hussain bought meals for the group of four men he assembled because none of them had jobs or money. The owner of a Newburgh restaurant where they occasionally ate considered him "the boss," because he would pick up the tab. Among his other inducements were the offer of $250,000 and a BMW to the most volubly anti-Semitic plotter, the man the government says was the ringleader, James Cromitie.

re: #95 friarstale

I would rather have you stick to the science for a minute. Let's review:

You were snarking about the lake effect. So lets get the science clear before you move on to other talking points.

As bodies of water get warmer and the atmosphere gets warmer, there is more vapor pressure and the atmosphere can retain more water vapor.

For the water vapor to form droplets, it has to cool to do so. The atmosphere is cooler the farther up it goes - but since the atmosphere is warmer, the water vapor has to go up higher to cool that way. When a cold front does come in, it will rapidly cool a great deal more water vapor in the atmosphere. This means more intense snow storms and rainstorms are possible.

We still do have winter, because of the way the earth orbits (and something to do with the angle of our spin axis being not exactly perpendicular to the plane of the orbit, but I won't confuse you with a discussion of flux).

As to the links,

Those links that I tend to post are from scientific journals, peer reviewed research and the sites of scientific organizations like NASA, NOAA, Princeton University, MIT etc...

Those are for grown ups.

For you, it is more important that you learn something basic, like where rain comes from. You should have learned this in grade school. Since you didn't, now is a perfect time.

Siberian Methane to Dwarf CO2 as Global Warming Threat

seems that more Methane may further accelerate (non-A) Global Warming

This is the methane feedback. More CO2 means a warmer atmosphere means less ice means more methane seeps.

"Though methane trapped under the permafrost" isn't the full mechanism in this case. What happens is that is gets warm enough for bacteria to eat plant material buried in the now, less frozen, Siberian bog. Methane is produced as a waste product.

Methane is a very potent GHG and we could quite easily cross a methane tipping point in the bogs. As to it further accelerating the warming, absolutely. The methane bomb we have cooking up north is very concerning.

Pushing Back Against the Methane Tipping Point

Here's one piece of mitigating information: it's unclear how long this methane leak has been happening, or the degree to which the measured methane levels exceeds previous amounts. If we're lucky, this is actually a status quo situation, and we still have time before we reach a tipping point. But basing our strategy on "if we're lucky" is not very wise.

They go on to say:

So what about methanotrophic bacteria? Such bacteria have long been recognized in freshwater areas and soil, and have had limited use in bioremediation efforts...research suggests that methanotrophic Archaea may be responsible for the oxidation of up to 80% of the methane in the oceans...So here's the proposal: we need to deploy methanotrophic microbes at the East Siberian Ice Shelf.

It does sound like a bit of a "Hail Mary" pass, but given recent advances in bioengineering, it might be possible...

Siberian Methane to Dwarf CO2 as Global Warming Threat

Once you've covered (as LVQ suggested) some basic grade school science like how rain and snow works then move on to some basic systems theory which is the basis of really understanding ecological systems and you'll find things like 'positive feedback' loops. Once you get an understanding of those concepts you'll understand what's happening with the methane seeping issue and how AGW fits with the whole thing. In a nutshell warming can create feedback loops that accelerate (exponentially) ecosystem processes. Ecosystems do not function in linear a fashion.

Pushing Back Against the Methane Tipping Point

They go on to say:

It does sound like a bit of a "Hail Mary" pass, but given recent advances in bioengineering, it might be possible...

One problem is that those critters in the ocean are adapted to living in salt water. The melting bog lakes are freshwater.

Another problem is that the oceans, being all made out of water, allow for a very rapid spread of the microbes. The Siberian bog is tens of thousands of little lakelets.

This also does nothing to counteract methane releases from the oceans. Dissolved CO2 in the oceans kill those very bacteria

A final problem is that it is uncertain what releasing a new microbe into that eco system will do.

The best thing to do would be to simply deploy the non fossil fuel energy technologies we already have, create millions of jobs doing so, make a ton of money and improve our national security - and oh yes save the world.

So the binding energy for hydrogen in methane is less than it is for water IIRC, but why would you want to to do this. Also, to do this you would need to catch the methane first. Which is a real problem. You really can't just suck it all out of the atmosphere with some large facility or a thousand or even ten thousand such facilities.

Even if you could, unless you are running those facilities off of something other than fossil fuels to power them, you still haven't fixed anything.

Back to an earlier conversation...

The first time I went to Detroit, I had a job interview downtown, right on the waterfront. I had directions to get there from my hotel in the suburbs. When I left, I figured I'd just reverse the directions, which would have worked fine except that I didn't realize that the parking structure exit was on the east side of the building, whereas the entrance had been on the north side (I assumed they were in the same place).

This 90 degree offset eventually led to me driving through a very burned out neighborhood, looking for some kind of landmark that might point me back in the right direction. I was pretty nervous, but mostly it was sad. A lot of the buildings were empty and a lot of the cars abandoned.

Eventually, I saw a teenager in a hooded sweatshirt riding a bike across a vacant lot. I asked him how to get to the freeway. He was very polite and gave me perfect directions. Other than that, I don't think I saw anyone in the neighborhood.

So, that's my little Detroit story for the day.

There's is nothing 'alarmist' about a real warning. Rejecting something on the basis that it predicts a very bad event occurring is completely illogical. If someone warns you that if you light a match in a pure oxygen environment you'll cause a conflagration, they're not being alarmist, they're being realistic.

If someone warns you that continuing to increase the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere will cause the average temperature to rise, which will cause climate to change, crops to die, etc. etc., it's not alarmism either.

And we have directly measured data going back 200 years. However just to give you some perspective as to what 60 years means in science,

in 1880 we were just hammering out classical E&M and thermodynamics.

By 1940, we had relativity, (both special and general) atomic theory (even proof that atoms and parts of atoms like protons, neutrons and electrons exist), quantum mechanics, the beginnings of quantum field theory, the discovery of anti-matter, and nuclear theory.

This is why you should read the site I keep pointing you to: it disposes with those common myths and misconceptions really easily.

[Link: www.skepticalscience.com...]

While CO2 is essential for plant growth, all agriculture depends also on steady water supplies, and climate change is likely to disrupt those supplies through floods and droughts. It has been suggested that higher latitudes – Siberia, for example – may become productive due to global warming, but the soil in Arctic and bordering territories is very poor, and the amount of sunlight reaching the ground in summer will not change because it is governed by the tilt of the earth. Agriculture can also be disrupted by wildfires and changes in seasonal periodicity, which is already taking place, and changes to grasslands and water supplies could impact grazing and welfare of domestic livestock. Increased warming may also have a greater effect on countries whose climate is already near or at a temperature limit over which yields reduce or crops fail – in the tropics or sub-Sahara, for example.

On a related note I'm am really happy to say that a good number of people that live in my area are starting to put thoughts into action to address the myriad of issues related to a changing climate. The list of what people are doing and planning are doing is great. It's moving beyond just individual solutions to community wide planning, projects and support for initiatives. The area spans two municipalities which in the last election saw one completely change the entire council and the other the majority of it change. The biggest difference is the outlook of both of them and one of the first things both new mayors are planning on implementing is are community climate change plans.

It's basically being integrated as a basic foundation of all community planning. I'm pretty durn excited to be in a place where the arguments about 'if it's real' are part of the past. Also important to note this area politically is considered very conservative and rural and one of the biggest interest groups want to do things is the farming community. Why? Because these folks who work with the land and have done for most of their lives, their parents lives and their grandparents lives are seeing it's real world effects enough to know that it isn't some sort of elite liberal plot or hoax plied by the sciency types.

Wow, then you must really hate NASA, NOAA, The AGU, the APS, The Royal Society and the national Academies of the US, Canada, France, Russia, Germany and Israel, who say the same things!

But to answer your question specifically, places around the world are already getting devastated. Why don't you look into the heat waves and enhanced monsoons in Asia or the failures of the Russian crops. Or you could talk to the Eskimos, whose lifestyle is vanishing. Why not just look these things up?

As to when everyday Americans get devastated, You should maybe look at how the Colorado river is doing, or the amount of ice in th Sierra Nevadas.

it is already happening now. It gets much much worse. By 2100 at this rate, between dustbowls and droughts in the mid and south west, and flooding on the coasts, there will not be anything like America as we know it.

The one thing your missing is that with acid rain and the ozone issue is that they were enough of a crisis that people actually did things about them to mitigate them. World wide regs and treaties and whatnot. The reason that they don't appear to be such a 'crisis' today isn't that they never were in the first place it's that people actually DID something about them.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Just finished reading a pretty good book that touches on climate change and one of the biggest concerns facing people in the coming century - the ability to get potable water. It goes through the history of man's effort to tame water - using it for irrigation, transportation, sanitation, and its exploitation and pollution and how we're now beginning to understand the limits of water accessibility and how this can and will affect the coming century as water resources become more difficult to access.

Climate change will affect rainfall patterns, which affects stream and river flows, and the potential results could be catastrophic. Underground aquifers are being depleted at alarming rates, and unless significant steps are taken to reduce and reuse water, droughts and famines will become more widespread.

Looks like and interesting book. I'm surrounded by water and it's difficult at times not to take it for granted. I did grow up in a city though that now regularly experiences water issues. Some of it's due to sheer population growth but over the past few years the major determining factor is winter snow pack and percpitation levels. Milder winters means less water in the watersheds that feed the city.

I don't have a problem with Gore's advocacy - it was his trading on that policy that makes me a bit cynical. That appearant conflict of interest is a contributing factor to the politicization of a process that should have a home more secured in science and environmental policy.

No offense taken. (Although it was nice of you to clarify).

I don't have a problem with Gore's advocacy - it was his trading on that policy that makes me a bit cynical. That appearant conflict of interest is a contributing factor to the politicization of a process that should have a home more secured in science and environmental policy.

How is it a conflict of interests?

in 1999, I was walking my two-year-old daughter. We ran across some remaindered 5 1/4" floppy discs on sale at a local shop. I told her that she would someday be able to tell her grandchildren about how she saw such a thing.

And I also told her about how when I was born, a telephone, TV, music player, radio and typewriter were all separate devices that could only communicate through bulky analog technology platforms...

I'd be more impressed if they were 8" floppies. Those things were a hoot. Made good frisbees when they failed too. Or if you didn't like the Sysadm...

I think 5.5 drives used same ribbon as a 3.25 drive, so theoretically you can still hook it up to your mobo if you can find one. I would be curios to find out if your dad's floppies are still readable, I found that most 1.4mb floppies shed their magnetic coating after a few years and became unreadable.

I would expect that most of them are unreadble by now. It's one of the things I tease my Dad about. "Dad why are you storing useless pieces of plastic?" He's a pack rat though so I expect that at some point (later rather then sooner hopefully) I will have to figure out what to do with his boxes of old technology.

re: #216 Obdicut

Holy crap, you just compared Al Gore to BP.

Take a moment and think this the hell through, dude.

You seriously think that Al Gore, incredibly wealthy dude, is attempting to get people to realize the dangers of climate change so that he can profit off of it? That's his grand fucking scheme for making more money-- convincing everyone of a very, very important scientific truth and making money off of it?

That is really, really fucking close to saying that we can't trust scientists because they make money off of grants, or saying that we can't trust anyone promoting cleaner energy because they stand to profit.

God, I'm so sick of that position. It just drives me up the fucking wall. Suddenly if someone is making money off of something they're bad, bad, bad, even if they're absolutely right.

Can you explain why?

My position isn't as extreme as that. I would prefer to see politicians that stand to benefit from something put their assets in a blind trust if they are advocating or legislating something they can profit from. For example here in Georgia our outgoing Governor has the potential to profit from expanding the Port of Savannah. Something that would benefit our state. He's catching flak for his own potential profit. He would have been better off to put that company in a blind trust before persuing the expansion. His motives could be pure but he left himself wide open for criticism.

Gore could have been more circumspect and in turn kept his advocacy from being politicized - that's all. (And no he doesn't deserve the level of grief he receives).

re: #203 friarstale

Alarmism sells? Atlanta nearly ran out of water because of an ongoing drought in the Southeast and Alabama and Florida had to hash out water usage up and downstream to avoid a potentially crippling situation for the city.

Flooding occurs all over the country and causes millions of dollars in damages annually in the US - and that amount can vary greatly depending on where the flooding occurs. Inadequate infrastructure maintenance can make the situation worse - think failed levees. Studies find that a significant portion of the nation's dams are inadequate or are in need of significant improvement.

NYC is spending billions to build a new water tunnel to insure that the flow of water is uninterrupted - and is buying up thousands of acres of land around its watershed to protect it from industrial and agricultural runoff.

This isn't alarmism - it's a recognition that there are serious issues with water access and that they're only going to get worse with continued population growth because of the pressure on a finite resource.

Congratulations, you have reached step 4 of the patented right-wing global warming argument method.

1) AGW isn't real.

2) AGW is real, but might not be too bad! I like warm weather!

3) AGW is real and bad, but addressing it would mean "economic suicide". What about China and India???

4) AGW is real and bad, and we should do something about it, but I can't get on board because meanie liberals are making it a "political football".

5) Repeat 1).

It is utterly maddening. They are pointedly blind and willfully blind. The classic projection is lovely as well. They style themselves as "free thinkers" and call those who look at actual evidence and science, "true believers." Yet, to ignore fact after fact and to be shown wrong clearly on point after point, and never acknowledge that take the blind faith of a true believer from the church of the Gomorrah Old Party.

Despite all the hype about trying to clog up the works at airports where full body screening devices are operating, Newark Liberty is reporting no issues on this - the busiest travel day of the year. Hopefully this remains the case because the idiocy of trying to create havoc on a travel day because of a snit over TSA workers trying to do their job to keep the public safe from terrorists is just overwhelming. The FBS system has been in the works since the Bush Administration and FBS was seen as less invasive than pat-downs for the public. It isn't a perfect system, and secondary screenings will be required, but a layered defense is needed to protect against terrorists who are always trying to outsmart law enforcement.

Everyone should just use common sense - both the flying public and the TSA.

Moreover, calls to boycott the airlines over the screening will accomplish what exactly? Kill airlines that operate on razor thin margins? Limit transportation options even further? Seek out cars, buses, and trains?

Just because rail and bus terminals don't have screenings doesn't make them preferable - it keeps them a target of terrorists who might prefer the softer target (and which they've attacked overseas in Spain and England, and where buses were frequently attacked in Israel).

There isn't much else the US can do. Since the South isn't prepared for a war, the US isn't going to launch airstrikes on its own - that would bring reprisal attacks against South Korea directly. Sanctions are likely, even though they wont do much. Strongly worded UN letters are similarly useless and futile, but those are the options available to the US - and any US president in this situation (which has been the case since the partition of the Korean Peninsula).

A show of force with a carrier task force is about all the US can do militarily unless the South agrees to go to war or carry out attacks against the North in reprisal for the resumption of hostilities.

No it isn't. Put the whole thing in context.

It really pisses me off when others insist on defining what I meant by my own words. I already took some responaiblity and told you that what you interpreted my original comments as was not my intent.

I'm sorry, but I'm standing by my criticism of your comments.

You said this:

Those who would use this conundrum for personal and political gain (Yes you Al Gore) are doing damage just as those who fear competition from new technologies (Yes you GM) are clearly putting politics over sense.

Gore is not doing damage. Those who castigate him reflexively are. The reaction to Gore is damaging. And he does not gain politically.

Credits aren't necessarily a great solution, depending on how they're managed. Just as he's said he was wrong to support corn biodeisel as VP, he's not immune to mistakes.

What is insane, though, is saying that he is using the topic for personal and political gain. He has nothing to gain politically. His level of personal financial gain mostly comes from investment in companies that benefit from carbon credits but are actually green energy companies.

[Link: www.telegraph.co.uk...]

Last year Mr Gore's venture capital firm loaned a small California firm $75m to develop energy-saving technology.

The company, Silver Spring Networks, produces hardware and software to make the electricity grid more efficient.

He invested in a company that really, really does provide a solution.

Fair enough. Our basic disagreement comes down to how much of his advocacy is driven by personal gain and how much is driven by altruism. Even if he is purely altruistic his actions have left room for doubt. I have the same criticism of my Republican Governor (who I work for) so it is not a partisan thing with me.

1. I don't miss these shows when I don't watch them.
2. Watching the Finale is all you need to do to get the whole series summed up in two hours - they even played the scene where Sarah Palin maybe wasn't really getting booed.

re: #282 lawhawk

There isn't much else the US can do. Since the South isn't prepared for a war, the US isn't going to launch airstrikes on its own - that would bring reprisal attacks against South Korea directly. Sanctions are likely, even though they wont do much. Strongly worded UN letters are similarly useless and futile, but those are the options available to the US - and any US president in this situation (which has been the case since the partition of the Korean Peninsula).

A show of force with a carrier task force is about all the US can do militarily unless the South agrees to go to war or carry out attacks against the North in reprisal for the resumption of hostilities.

Any reports on whether the NK's ceased fire at will or were hammered down by the counter battery fire? SK has some really good tracking/targeting arty. If the unit got hammered it may provide more pause than a planned attack that resulted in only minor damage from the counter fire.

No.
Ban all idiotic dissent.
I dissent on topics of abortion, I dissented from the majority of the group on the efficacy of the drilling moratorium, and I'm still here. I stated my reasons; some agree, some don't, it's how it is. I didn't (and don't) whine and cry. If I don't understand something enough to add intelligent points, I keep my mouth shut and read and learn.

It's not dissent that's banned.

That's part of my problem. He was trading credits not necessarily producing a product or service that would do something real about emmissions.

(I'm open to correction here if I have swallowed a lie about the credits)

It sounds more like Enron than FirstSolar.

As I recall he dabbles in lots of green things, which is what most wealthy people do. I as well am open to correction but his mega mansion in Tenn (that he was incessantly hammered on) had extensive green technology added to it, and he invested in some of those technologies.

He may trade in the carbon credit market, but I don't think that's a big deal. He should get capitalist credit for that!

Besides, it's hypocritical for Gore to get hammered on this by the Usual Suspects because the denial industry is doing the same exact thing by denying AGW because it's in their financial best interest. As long as Gore is upfront about his investments and financial interests he can turn this around and bludgeon his critics with the fact that he's putting his $ where his mouth is (just like they are).

I haven't seen anything to indicate that the South pasted the North Korean battery or that there were North Korean casualties. It is possible that the battery that opened fire ran out of ammo and that resulted in the end of the fighting or they were told from higher up to stop firing. It's just not clear why they stopped - maybe they got word that the South was preparing to launch its ground attack aircraft across the peninsula and the North backed down. That latter bit may be the more likely reason the North's artillery fire stopped.

The North wanted to send a message without getting itself pinned down in a wider conflict. Do just enough damage to send a message and threat, but not so much so as to bring about an actual military reprisal across the entire length of the DMZ.

So in case any of you are wondering about that post, I encountered a searing essay written by a very Frum Jew about how all Jews if they believe in G-d need to vote for the GOP. His essay was full of references to the Ludwig van Mises Institute, and certain rabbiam that make Meir Kahane look like Jane Fonda. As far as I am concerned this was utter chillul Hashem. That means a desecration of G-d.

It is tragic that amongst the ultra black hats there is a subset that thinks this way - contrary to all Jewish law. Then Again there are plenty of other ohh so holy people from other religions who are a bit of an embarrassment. These ones are ours.

I took great offence at this and posted my essay about why Jews vote Republican (and most of us don't) at that site. I responded to challenges in an utterly polite manner. These are Yeshiva kids - and a few of their rabbaim.

The immediate response of such people when you point out Torah verses that prove they are being hypocritical (to put it nicely) is to claim that their interlocutor is not Jewish and avoid any of the subsequent points. It turns out that many of the posters there are Yeshiva students who really didn't know as much Torah as they thought. Unfortunately, this is a very, very right wing place and my answers to their challenges were all deleted.

Now I could bore you with why the rant of this poor person is so deluded. He is trying to shift a basic principle of Jewish law into a more obscure discussion. But the fact that they are dismissing Avot and the Rambam should tell you something. The fact that they are doing so by snarking over which choice of many accepted transliterations are used from a language that does not use English letters should tell you something else.

This discussion happened a little while ago. The stalkers found the original post and the incensed ravings of the original GOP poster and his friends, but none of my responses because they were deleted. Religious observance is not a measure of intelligence.

If it were, Arab regimes which claim to be 'Islamic' would not be among the most backward and failed states in the world.

And that is not an opinion- the UN Report on Human Development noted education in the Arab world is at the bottom of the barrel, save for sub Saharan Africa.

To be honest with you what happened was exactly what I expected would happen. These people live in very insular communities and vote for who their rav tells them to vote for.

One of them challenged me to back up a point with something that showed more learning like quoting the Rif. The Rif, Rabbi Yitzchak Al-fasi , is another famous rabbi, one of the Rishonim who slightly predates Rambam.

In fact, if you want the Rif, but don't like the Rambam, that also tells you something about these people. In fact it tells you a lot if you know Jewish philosophy.

He was not at all pleased when the Rif said what I was saying in very harsh tones - in fact, vastly more harsh tones.

But that really doesn't matter. You might ask why I bothered in the first place knowing that it was likely what I said would be deleted. Well these are students. Some of them deserve to get a chance to think outside of a rigidly enforced bubble. Some of them did too. They were also deleted.

re: #360 LudwigVanQuixote

I claim no expertise on Jewish religious authorities, save for they are not infallible.

I do know that A Rabbi E Wasserman, a legitimate and renowned scholar advised his followers not to leave Europe for America, just prior to WWII, instead telling them to have faith.

Further comment is unnecessary.

Yes.

My point is that religious observance, or following as religious leader has nothing to with how you are supposed to live your life.

Religious instruction is meant to provide you with the tools to make moral decisions that affect your life- no more, no less. You are supposed to make those choices for yourself.

Religious leaders are not meant to speak for God- He can speak for Himself.

If you're going for a 1GB video card (I'm assuming NVidia), you might as well hold back a couple more paychecks and get your second monitor with 120Hz refresh. This way you can get NVidia's 3DVision setup.

Well there is a lot to know from the commentaries. Interpretation and the need to get the contexts and the relevant laws that apply to any verse are frequently very valid concerns. Specifically, you really can't discount the oral tradition and expect to get it correct.

Shouldn't they be building clinics, nurseries, schools, and providing fired-4-maternity-leave moms with jobs instead of killing doctors? They're also supposed to be god fearing christians, where's the logic?!?

They're equally opposed to abortion and to, God forbid, anyone else having to pick up part of the tab for taking care of someone else's child.

When a situation is as serious as that of the current Israeli assault on Gaza, it is only proper to demand an accurate explanation as to why it is occurring. Western media is skewed and Western governments defend Israel's actions perhaps merely issuing a hollow plea for care to be taken for civilian life.

They hate the fact that we set up military bases around the world including on what they believe to be holy land. Look at it another way. Just yesterday, China announced plans to set up a military base in the Middle East. What do you think about the possibility of Chinese military bases on American soil? If you don't like the idea, then why do you think it's right for the U.S. to set up bases elsewhere?

More from that link on Tea Party/Drudge Report/Alex Jones hero, John Tyner:

Still not convinced? After being attacked on 9/11, why did the U.S. invade Afghanistan? Ostensibly, it was to find and destroy Al-Qaeda, a group of maybe 300 people at the time, but instead it ousted the Taliban government; a government that the U.S. itself had propped up and to whom the U.S. was providing aid up until 9/11. The U.S. invaded a sovereign nation, without a declaration of war, and ousted its government. It did the same thing in Iraq two years later, all the while, killing innocent civilians and causing all sorts of collateral damage. It's gearing up to do it again in a number of places. Iran, Pakistan, and Yemen are all possibilities. Predator drone strikes are already having disastrous results in Pakistan.

Excuse me? Escape velocity could be achieved any number of ways - including collisions at high speeds at a sufficient distance from the sun. Objects could also be cast out into long irregular orbits and further disturbed out of those orbits by passing objects with sufficient gravity (other asteroids, planetoids, subplanets, etc.) that cause the objects to wander into interstellar space.

In our own solar system, Kupier belt objects are at a sufficiently distance so that collisions between those objects could push them out of the sun's grasp. We already know that objects can pick up speed by using gravity wells of other objects (NASA and JPL have repeatedly used some planets, including the Earth) to accelerate our satellites to cross the solar system faster than if they attempted to do so using propellant alone. Such objects could react similarly. Those that get too close might end up being captured in the gravity of those planets or they could be thrown clear.

Sarah Palin's Alaska fell 40% on Sunday night to 3 million viewers.

Not many were in the key adult demo either. Only 885,000 viewers were ages 18-49, dropping 44% from last week.

re: #517 yasharki

Here's another hint. Supernova are formed by collapsing stars that are made up of - wait for it - gases. When the star collapses beyond a certain point - the explosion sends a certain portion of the gases into the near space around them along with tremendous amounts of energy across the entire spectrum.

What's left after can be a neutron star or black hole depending on the size of the pre-explosion star. In any event, the expelled matter consists of gases and dust.

Supernovae can also leave behind different types of objects. After some supernova explosions, there remains a small, dense star composed mainly of neutrons or perhaps of elementary particles called quarks. Such a star is called a neutron star. Rapidly rotating, highly magnetized neutron stars are called pulsars. After other explosions, an invisible object called a black hole may be left behind. A black hole has such powerful gravitational force that not even light can escape it. In some cases, no object of any kind remains after a supernova explosion.

Scientists believe that supernovae created all the heavier elements, such as iron, gold, and uranium, that are found on earth and have been detected in objects outside the solar system. Also, there is evidence that some high-energy cosmic rays originate in supernovae.

In 1054, Chinese astronomers recorded a supernova so bright that it was visible during the day. The explosion left behind a pulsar and a huge cloud of gas and dust known as the Crab Nebula, which still can be seen today.

Nebula are the stellar remnants of nova and supernova - and all consist of gas and dust that is made visible by nearby starlight.

Thanks for playing though....
